What is the best propeller for the Hunter 430 with a Yanmar engine?

Define best...

Hi Stephen again, I'll turn my hat around to the drivetrain side again. Define best. Best performance under power? Forward or reverse? Under sail? Cost? Different prop for each of those bests. A 3-blade fixed prop gives you the best propulsion in forward. A 3-blade feathering the best in reverse. A 2-blade folding is the best under sail. A 2-blade fixed is the least costly. So... Which is best? Can you give us and idea of what you are hoping to improve? Then we can give you an answer directed at your specific needs.

Happy with the Autoprop...

on my 430, though the boat was fitted with it new, and I have nothing to compare it with. Those with the MaxiProp have also been pleased according to prior posts here (check the archives). The boat I have has little very little prop walk in reverse, but to be truly accurate there is some and will always be with a single screw boat.

We Just ordered a new prop for our 430...

from Kilian props in California. We had the usual trouble with severe prop wash in reverse ect. Tim Kilian the owner asked alot of questions like gear ratio, existing prop, speed at 3000rpm with existing prop ect. We have 18x15 2 blade now and he customizing a 18 x14 3 blade that he guarantees will perform the same at 3000rpm (7.5k for us) and eliminate all prop walk.. If we dont like the performance he will return our money...Killian has a great reputation on the West coast. The new brass prob will be $450 with the custom work..They are great people and are on the web at Kilianprop.com Dick McKee SV Constellation the

Sounds great, Dick, but

how can he eliminate "all" prop walk. I don't think the various "P" factors (forgive a flyer's terminology refering to prop effects) can be eliminated, though their effects may be diminished greatly. Such things as asymetrical thrust of the downturning blade, torque, gyroscopic effects remain. In a twin screw power boat, and in twin aircraft, you get the best results by using counter-rotating engine directions to cancel them out (not all use them though). Can't do this in a sailboat though, unfortunately. Once you get enough water moving past the rudder, though, naturally these forces become relatively slight.

We need a complete follow up on this prop. I have only heard great things about the work the Kilian does. There have been several posts on the site about their props. I assume that you are having winglets and cupping done? I hope that you have some performance numbers with you old prop to see what you gain and what you loose.

3-Blade Fixed

Given your priorities it sounds like you are a 3-blade fixed prop customer. It would hard for me to justify the additional cost of a feathering or folding propeller if sailing performance is not a priority for you. Be aware if you have a 2-blade fixed prop now, you will notice a difference in sailing speed due to the additional drag of the 3-blade fixed prop.

Steve....

I recorded info at 2500 2700 and 3000 rpm, and intend to do a comparison. They are shipping the prop tomorrow and we be on vacation from 9/22 thru 10/7 on the boat. Were gona go uphill from San Diego to LA and the Channel Islands... I'll post a opinion when we return.. Dick McKee

Dick: You did not mention if you were having the winglets and the cupping done on the prop. If you are having winglets, and have the ability, could you take a picture of the prop for everyone to see when you do your post?.
