42cc Passage Rudder Post & Ressed Furling Drum Questions

Considering purchasing a Passage 42cc (1990-97) and researching refits/upgrades to make it more 'bluewater' capable.

I've received countless contradictory responses for which model years of the 42cc have a compost rudder and which have a stainless rudder post. And some people have replaced their compost to stainless. But this is a larger expense. So for the compost rudder post users out there, have you had any issues or issues or concerns over the longevity of the post?

Ressed Furling Drum Question...I see some people raise the forward furling drum out of the recessed factory hole it sits in (by adding a new chainplate it seems). Is this because the furling/jib lines getting caught up possibly on occasions? Or what benefit does this provide?

Thanks everyone! I have several more inquires about upgrades & refits, but I'll save for next time ;) Cheers.

Wise choice. How is she equipped?
We purchased our 1991 in 2002. Sailed her thousands of miles all over PNW waters. No regrets. I believe our rudder post is SS. So no comment.

Regarding the Hood furling drum, no change from original except replaced the long "U" bolt that secures the drum to the chainplate with a solid SS bar to keep the drum from rotating causing resistance. Wrote an article about it in the 'Boat Info' section. One possible reason for the change you referenced is to reduce sea water from splashing into the chain locker in rough seas.

I've made several modifications/additions to our boat, which can be found in the 'Boat Info' tab. Feel free to pose questions here.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds interesting about the ss bar, I'll look for the article.

Thanks again for your expertise and time.
You are most welcome. No. I inspect the original very robust standing rigging each year for broken strands, cracks etc. It remains in good condition with no stress signs. If I were to head out for a long ocean passage I would replace, but not likely at this time in my life. Too much to see and do in our PNW waters. The only concern that a professional rigger referenced when he inspected it some years ago was that a couple of the upper inner shroud swages were setting a bit proud

One spot that I need to inspect is the chainplate for any signs of corrosion or weakness. No water has entered that area so there should be no problem, but I still need to do it.
