I have noticed that the earlier 426 had mast struts and the newer, 44's do not. I am wondering why the difference. Does this have anything to do with battened mainsails vs non-battened or ?? Thanks. Steve Burk

Yes it does

The struts are on boats with the full roach main. No struts on boats with roller furling main.

Bob, can you explain the dynamics?

Just to help us understand these struts. We were talking about them last spring. The conclusion was that they hold down the coach roof so the chain plates don't have to extend to the hull beams and the interior looks wider. If so, the struts should be needed regardless of battens. What's your take?

Strut explanation from Hunter Factory

According to factory, each rig has a momnet of inertia that is different. The furling rigs have a taller mast, and longer boom and the mast is not pre-bent as much, therefore the moment of inertia is different and the struts not required. Definition: "Moment of inertia is the name given to rotational inertia, the rotational analog of mass for linear motion. It appears in the relationships for the dynamics of rotational motion " Way over my head, but sounds good !
