I have a 1998 Hunter 410 that has a crack in the rudder. In order to fix it I need to lower the rudder about 6" to gain access to the top of the rudder. Sitting in dry dock where it is now I can just lower it to the ground. Has anyone ever lowered or removed their rudder that could walk me through the steps needed for this procedure?

two bearings

Dave I think there are two bearings which need to be pressed out/removed to lower the shaft but not sure. If I were you, I'd check directly with Hunter rather than seek advice here unless you're lucky enough to find someone who has done it. As a minimum, they can send you the design drawing.

Our 376 Rudder

Dave, To drop our rudder, we need only to access the quadrant, remove it via 4 bolts and there is a pin that can be removed with a drift pin. The rudder will then drop out provided that you have adequate ground clearance beneath. Some people have been alleged to dig a hole to allow the rudder to clear. Otherwise, you will need your yard to lift the boat. Hope this helps. Mike D s/v Serenity 1998 H376

corroded and frustrated

Thanks guys for the help, I really appreciate it. I have a problem with corrosion of the two types of metals. I have the four bolts that hold the quadrant together out. One unfortunately broke ( I will have to tap this later). The large pin that goes through the center I have not been able to budge. I have used heat, 36" j bar, penetrating oil, an electric impact gun, ( tomorrow I will try a pneumatic one. If anyone has any other ideas please send them along. I am going tomorrow to do battle with the bolt. Thanks Dave

Marco Garcia,

Edson

I ordered the quadrant from Edson Marine 508-995-9711, came with a new bolt ( the big one) fwd aft movement with a breaker bar, the BIG hammer and a Big drift pin, lots of loosening oil.... Lots of " Why do I get involve in this???" questions until the bolt gets loose... the corrosion is between the bolt and the quadrant, since I was replacing it, drilled from top to bottom until the bolt got loose, but you are not changing the quadrant.( about 500 with shipping) perhaps penetrating oil and a torch to heat the quadrant might loose it.. yours is 5 yrs younger... Hope you get it loose... good luck!!! Marco

Last option...

Dave, If, as last resource, you have to replace the quadrant, ( hope not), give Edson a call to ask them about how to measure the rudder shaft diameter. Do not order the quadrant without measuring the shaft and talking to them.... Good luck... Marco
