410 Aft Locker Leak

There was a partition between the two aft lockers. Mine has disintegrated due to moisture. I have sprayed water all over the rear of the boat and cannot see any coming in. I am thinking it must be coming through the hull joint at the water line and weeping into the partition.

Have others had this problem? If it is the hull joint, how would you seal it. There is no access from inside the boat. I guess it would have to be done at a haul out but then how do you get the rubber cover off without destroying it?

Is the water in the compartment salt water or fresh water??
Other things to check that I have removed and re-bedded on my 1999 H410 ....
1. The swim ladder fasteners
2. The grab handles
3, The stern light
4. The dinghy davit brackets
5. The transom shower plumbing and connections and the bedding on the fixture itself
6. The city water plumbing and fittings and the bedding on the fixture itself
7. The attachment points on the stern rails
8. The deck fills (waste and diesel).
8. Do you have an installed generator? Aft A/C? A radar tower? These present additional multiple opportunities :)

I also have seen signs of water in mine. But I never have seen any water get into the lockers even while I was sitting in the stbd locker installing a generator. There are lots of sources as Bill says, but it could also come from almost anywhere and run down along the hull/deck joint. Far as that aft joint goes I have always felt the best thing to do is fiberglass tape the joint from the inside since it is below the water a lot of time.

It definitely can be the aft rub rail at the water level, which on my boat sits half in and half out at the waterline when sitting still and under water when underway. I attribute the seepage to the same design for failure as the rest of the rubrail; screws through the deck hull seam not perfectly screwed in and/or inadequate application of sealant on the hull deck seam. It required getting down inside the aft swim platform lockers to find that out. (Make sure you have someone around to help you get out!) I found several trails left by water seeping in through the aft rail seam. Attempts to stop the leakage with caulk were unsuccessful. I ultimately had a boatyard peel off the rubrail from it's split under the swim ladder up to the level of the swim platform lids, fiberglass the exposed seam from the outside and reinstall the rubrail. Many boat bucks later but it is completely dry. Good luck.

Hi Dennis
There is an article on the old C-time blog with a similar issue with the join with photos which may help. I had a similar leak and it was the outside shower connections it was so hard to find on the white hose lines.
If your looking at replacing the partitioning ì suggest you look at poly board. Thats what we call it in Oz. Easy to work with, never rots, any colour.

I am pretty sure my leak is in the joint. Looked a C-Times blog again and he addressed this issue. It looks like he cut out the bottom of the back lockers to get to the joint. I am not inclined to do that. I corresponded with Hunter and they said I could remove the rub rail by heating it. I think that will be my next step but will have to wait for the next haul out.

Why cut out the lockers???? I have been in both my swim lockers lots of times and I'm a fat man. Heck if you take the removable section of the stbd locker off the access to that side is huge.

That's not the issue. the hull joint is not exposed in the locker. You would have to cut the bottom of the locker along the hull joint to have access to it. I get in my lockers. In fact was stuck in one when the lid closed. Tie it open with a bungee now.

Can you further describe the location of the leak location? "5 inches from hull?" Thanks.

Water leak was just a little higher than water level. Therefore leak only happened on the way...stern squad down when you sailing/motoring. You can see screwdriver penetrating wall from port side in on picture ...4217..see attached pictures.
Good luck to find your leak....John
