4000 UV as Roof Sealant??

My birthday was a week ago Friday, since it was my first "big" one (30), I got a very nice present. 4 days in Puerto Rico!! :) While we were there I saw a billboard for roofing sealant called 4000. It was white and came in a huge bucket and the guy was applying it with a squeege. It looked just like like 3M 4000 UV! Anyone heard of this before? I couldn't understand the rest of the billboard as my spanish isn't very good...

Also on a related note, I recently saw that Home Depot now stocks 5200 in both the regular tube and the large caulk guns.... These poor homeowners unsuspecting don't know what they are getting themselves into!

Happy Birthday! Nice to see someone on here around the same age as I am. My wife has complained because there aren't as many people with sailboats that are around our age. Eventually people our age will grow out of the go fast boats and learn the beauty of sailing! At least some of them will......Either way, we are lucky to have found such a cool hobby!

4P: I am not sure but many homes in the islands have flat roofs. They use elastomeric paint to seal them.

If you have never seen these products they roll on right over tar roof and do an excellent job of expanding and contracting with the weather. We had a commerical building that we owned and had the roof redone with "torch down" and then painted it with one of these coatings. It lasted for many years after that before the new owner replaced the entire underlayment.

Also white is the preferred color to reflect the sun. It is many times superior to the aluminum color for this purpose. Really did help keep the solar gain down.

Well you are the one who saw the sign and not me. But got curious since I have used brush-on white elastometric coatings for a few trouble spots on my land-locked property. Maybe also could be used for a boat deck coating?

Anyway, a search shows 3M 4000 UV in the US is only available in caulk or squeeze tubes and is designed for water sealing seams rather than a large area roof coating. So either 3M dilutes it down to make it a liquid-in-bucket for tropical markets or .... Binging "4000 roofing", the first listing was http://www.specjm.com/products/roofing/topguard4000.asp. Could the bill board in Spanish been for this?

The city of Chicago now requires that all flat or sloped roofs that are being repaired or replaced use White or Silver roof products
