$400 to replace exhaust hose; quote seems high

Is it a hard run through some bulkheads with some kinks? Assume you mean from the muffler to the thru-hull. I replaced mine and it is about that length, goes through a bulkhead, and from starboard to port. It is stiff to work with but not hard to install.
I thought the price is about $8-12/ft. I doubt that it could be done in less than 2 hrs. It is a S.O.B. to do on the H'31. Two people are advised, but maybe one if they know what they are doing.
If it is just the section to the muffler I cannot imagine how you wouldn't do it yourself. Steve, you had a 31. How hard can that be?
Ed: I never had to do it, but the guy that purchased the boat did do it and I think that it took two of them 2-3 hrs. You need someone that is NOT too large to get into that locker.
I would think that some of that lube that electricians use to pull wire would be good to slop onto the hose to run it through the bulkhead/stringer.
It is not impossible, but can be a daunting task. Just getting the exhaust hose off the elbow can be bad.
The muffler on the H'31 is a fiberglass box that allows the exhaust hose to connect on the top of the box. You want to be careful not to damage that connection too. I assume that it is not as difficult to remove as the one on the elbow (less heat).

Well being that the hose FELL off the mixing elbow on me yesterday about 50 yards from a lee shore while motoring yesterday...
I think I can sqeeze in there. I'll have to take another look at it. I just couldnt see where it connects to the muffler.
I read somewhere that Dawn dishwashing soap works magic with tight rubber fittings.
From what I've read I dont think its more than I can muster. I'll keep you posted

parts, two people for two hours at yard rates...pretty close to reasonable...
doesn't mean I wouldn't give it a shot..."fell off the mixing elbow"... would definitely check that out. Did something move a lot and pull it off...or ....?

I had the mixing elbow replaced about two months ago and I guess it just slid off. It barely attaches to the end. It grabs only about a half inch of the elbow.
So I removed the piece from the elbow to the muffler in only 20 minutes with the help of a friend! We'll see how long it takes to get the new one in but if two regular people can fix this in under an hour I'm glad I didnt pay them $80/hr to do this work. It was brain dead simple.
Measured the hose and its 10ft 2 inches. West marine only sells it in 10ft pieces so that might explain why it was a little tight on the fitting. New hose was a hair under $150.
