I own a CS36 tradional yacht and seriously considering an Oceanis 400. Can any of the owner tell their thoughts of furling main versus a batten main sail. Any comments on how the 400 sails in Lake Ontario type conditions would be greatly appreciated David Fletcher

Furling anytime

I have a CS36 Merlin and last year got a Beneteau 393 with a furling main for sailing down south. At first I was a bit wary of a loose footed, hollow leech, battenless main but after using it for a season I wish I had the same rig on my Merlin. Unless you're going to race, the furling rig is the way to go. You use the main a lot more, especially if you're just day sailing and the best part is, at the end of the day, you don't have to lug that sail cover out and spend another ten minutes flaking and covering. There is a technique to properly using a furling main but it is fairly easy to master. The 400 will be a great boat for you, I'd get a 150 genoa for Lake Ontario.

Totally concur w/Rick .. have OC351 w/main furling and would not trade .. don't really race and it is sooo convenient is all kinds of weather. To avoid jamming just make sure you roll up tight. It is really great in bad weather! Good luck. Paul OC 351
