After 4 years of looking and evaluating, we just scored a well-kept, nicely-equipped 1989 40L.

We couldn't be happier.

I will have tons of questions as I get to know her. So stay frosty!

Thanks jd. One thing we noticed in the survey was a fair amount of water in the aft lazarettes (it had rained pretty hard the previous week)...which made its way down into the fuel tank/generator space below (and even under the berth mattress) via the fuel tank vent hose. Any ideas on how to stop the water ingress - or drain it away somehow once it's in. It's strange to me that there was no drainage in those big lockers.

Congrats Smack. I've had an 85' for a couple of years. Some observations:
- pretty fast boat :)
-
Steering on mine is kind of sensitive to amount of sail. The other day I was out on beam reach with full main and 140 in 12 kts. Seemed like an unreasonable amount of weather helm so I furled back to about 100 and gained .75 kts and list the hard weather.

- locker leaks not much problem for me but I have had issues with leakage from the low in the cockpit opening ports (under step and on port side going into aft cabin).

Mine rides much better in strong crop with the 100 gallon water tank under the v berth filled.

Enjoy

Awesome feedback. Thanks laj.

I'll experiment with the sail config. And I'll keep that water tank filled!
