I have a slight leak in the port side of the aft cabin on my H 40.5. I think it may be coming in from the aft hatch. However, I have owned the boat for several years and this is the first time that water has entered the aft cabin in this area. Has anyone experinced a similar problem and what was the fix. Thanks Vito Ciaravino

I had a leak too

Vito, I had a leak before I took delivery of my 1997 40.5. My dealer, Sailing Specialties was familiar with this leak and lead me to believe that it was common on this model Hunter. They put 2 men on it for a day, took up the port toerail and rebedded it. Have had no further problem for the last 2 years. My leak was appearing on the aft wall near the top of the backrest cushion. You're in Mystic, why not give them a call.

40.5 aft leaks

I had a small seep coming thru the screw holes in the starboard genoa track near the aft end. Rebedded 'em with boat-life caulk, and no more leak. Have heard of the cockpit pedestal leaking around the wires where they pass thru the deck if there is no bimini or other canvas above. Fix: More silicone around the wire/deck interface. If your 40.5 is a '93, the tubing for the transom vents does not angle upward into the boat as the later boats' does. The rain or spray enters thru the vent and runs downhill thru the vent hose 'till it finds a way to drip in the cabin. Fix: either cover the tops of the vents outside so water can't enter, or put a 45 degree pvc elbow (or similar) inboard of the vent to stop inflow. Once you find 'em and fix 'em she'll be dry for good(well almost). Leaks are inevitable and a real pain for us sailors, but once you've found and fixed 'em you'll be justifiably proud of yourself. Don't give up, in fact try to enjoy the hunt. Good Luck and I hope I've helped you solve your leak! Ron
