4 stroke on an h25

I'm about to hang a johnson sailmaster (25" shaft) on my h25. Have a heavy duty motor mount, but I have some trepidation about overstressing the transom with the extra weight and torque. Motor is 9.9 hp. Has anyone hung one of these bears on an early eighties boat? Should I plan on beefing up the transom? Thanks in advance for any advice, Jim

Beefing up transom

Hey Jim,The PO of my boat (1970 Columbia 26mkII) beefed up my transom by glassinng in a piece of 3/4" marine plywood on the inside. Seems very solid. The plywood doesn't go all the way across the transom so that he didn't have to shim it to account for the curvature of the transom. I'm not sure what they're like on the transom but a similar procedure is pretty simple and seems to work quite well.-Brent

We had a Honda 9.9 on our H'25

Jim:We had a Honda 9.9 on our H'25 for 8 years without any problems. We motored in heavy current, SF Bay waves etc. and never had any problems.If you are really concerned you could place a 2x6 in the inside of the transom if you are really concerned, but I do not think you need it.

Don't get Honda

they have alot of problems! I see a lot over heating! I had a Johnson Sailmaster and loved it. Plus it's an American company!

Jim:I am sorry to tell you but Johnson/Evenruide are not longer American products. They are owned by Bombardier of Canada. They may be built in the US (not sure about that) but they are no longer any more American than Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes and BMW.Now isn't that revolting!I know that we have heard some recent problems with Honda O/B engines, but they had an excellent reputation and hopefully these problems were just a blip in the mfg./engineering cycles.
