I just up-graded my 25 from a 9.9 hp Merc 2 stroke to a Honda 8 hp 4 stroke with a 15 hp bracket. After a trip into shallow water,the added stress of getting us off the mud left us with a crack in the transom. Does anyone out there have any recommendations suggestions or solutions. we were thinking of beefing up the transom on the inside and getting a better bracket to re-distribute the weight. It was suggested to us to get rid of the 4 stroke motor and go back to 2 stroke after a repair.

Four strokes are different animals
In replacing the outboard bracket on my Oday 23, I learned that its not just the additional weight of a four stroke that is at issue, its also the greater torque that can cause problems. Because of this, I was told never put a four stroke on a bracket that is not specifically engineered to take one; a bigger two stroke bracket might be able to handle the weight but not the torque. It sounds like your bracket had a problem with the torque. If your bracket was not built specifically for a four stroke, then it was probably at fault and there is no need to go back to a two stroke. Fix the transom, beef up the backing material (maybe a new large marine-grade plywood backing board and some big stainless washers), and buy a bracket made for a four stroke. There is no structural reason why a boat as big as an Oday 25 can't handle an 8 horse four stroke.

4 Stroke on O'Day 25
There has been 4 strokes on this boats for a number of years. Since '98 a Honda 9.9 with no problems. It is quieter, smells less, and uses less gas so it would be a hard choice for me to go back to a 2 stroke. From your description of a 15 hp bracket, I get the impression it is not original equipment. I don't know if it is OE, but the bracket on my boat is not bolted directly to the transom but to a wedge shaped fiberglass spacer that is about 4" at the top and 1" at the bottom. The boats did come with motor brackets so I think the transom is strong enough. I can also look at what type of plate is inside the hull, if you want. (I was horrified that I found most of my cleats just had nuts on the inside.)
