My family just bought a 1997 H26. We bought a 4 stroke 9.9 Mercury outboard for it. Yesterday we mounted the new motor but be ran into a problem. The cavity behind the mounting bracket is not deep enough to allow the motor to be tilted. We have been looking at a few options like a spring loaded bracket that can lower the motor to the water level. However, It seems to me that if I mounted the new bracket below the factory one the controls would be quite a reach to get to when it is lowered. Also, its a long shaft, so the prop would probably be way to deep underway. Does anyone know if modifying the existing factory installed bracket is a possiblity? Perhaps unbolting it and raising it up a few inches so we could have enough space for the tilted motor in the well? Any one with 4 stroke 9.9 hp motors on their H26? How did you work around this dilemma? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
