4 stroke motor mounting on H-26

My family just bought a 1997 H26. We bought a 4 stroke 9.9 Mercury outboard for it. Yesterday we mounted the new motor but be ran into a problem. The cavity behind the mounting bracket is not deep enough to allow the motor to be tilted. We have been looking at a few options like a spring loaded bracket that can lower the motor to the water level. However, It seems to me that if I mounted the new bracket below the factory one the controls would be quite a reach to get to when it is lowered. Also, its a long shaft, so the prop would probably be way to deep underway. Does anyone know if modifying the existing factory installed bracket is a possiblity? Perhaps unbolting it and raising it up a few inches so we could have enough space for the tilted motor in the well? Any one with 4 stroke 9.9 hp motors on their H26? How did you work around this dilemma? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Suzuki 9.9

Kevin, We have a Suziki 9.9 with electric start and remote controls on our H26 1996. It fits fine when tilted up. I've even heard of people putting a 15hp on this boat. I did replace the standard wood bracket for the newer plastic one of the same design. Got it direct from Hunter Parts Dept. Have you tried sliding the engine left or right on the mount? Keep in mind the motor housing may not be perpendicular to the mount. The thrust angle will have to be adjusted when you get the boat wet. The angle should allow the rudder to be neutral. I also mounted a fuel filter water separator ($30) in the motor well the size and style of a car oil filter. Very handy location. If you decide to use the controls on the engine be extremely careful. The exact time you'll need to shift gears or adjust the throttle, your head will be down by the motor when it needs to be watching the dock. It can be done but remote controls are safer. Ours is mounted on the end of the starboard seat. Good Luck. "Festivity" H26 1996

Honda 9.9 4 stroke

I have a Honda 9.9 4 stroke on my '98 H26. I had seen an earlier H26 with a wooden mount plate that was offset from the stern about 3 inches with a stainless steel bracket, mine is the white "plastic" plate bolted directly to the stern fiberglass. My motor has 3 tilt positions, I was able to tilt to the 1st and 2nd without modification but found this didn't get the prop completely out of the water. To tilt to the 3rd position I had to grind a small knub off the motor housing which allowed me to raise the control arm about 1/2" higher, now I can get the motor to lock in at the 3rd "click" with the throttle grip touching the cockpit floor. If you go to remote control you could probably remove the tiller control from the motor and have a little more space. Good luck, Jim Covey s/v Wampeter

Should Fit

Dear Kevin, I have 94' 26' with a Merc. 15 H P elc. start and it all fits just fine. Move the motor to one side so it can tilt back, you can adj. the steering left or right to make the boat go stright. Sometimes I have to turn the motor to the side to tilt it up without the throttle hitting the side of the well but it works well. As far as the throttle goes, I bought a remote ext. handle so you can sit on your upper seat and see out just fine. that was a birthday present for my wife when she started bringing the boat up to the dock, no chances of Honey I Can't See the Dock and crash.

Mounting 10 hp Honda on H26

Kevin: I had the same problem with my motor. I cut a piece of pressure treated 2x4 into a 1 1/2" by 2" board the width of the motor mount. I drilled 3 pilot holes thru it into the top of the existing mount and lag bolted it with 3/8 by 4" bolts. Drill small recess holes in the top of the 1 1/2 by 2" board Raising the motor 2" allows it to fully tilt out of the water and still have plenty of depth for the water pump.

Check the Archives

Seems like Crazy Dave was suggesting a while back an extension or somthing like that for the 260 motor mount. Sounds like if you could move it out or up an inch or so you'll be OK.

Correction on Honda 10hp mount

Kevin: It's Ray again. My first response worried me so I dogged thru the snow to check the measurements for that motor mount. I had used 2 pieces of treated 2x4 cut 1 1/2" by 2" and 19" long. These were stacked so the addition on top of the existing motor mount adds 3" of heigth 2" wide. Also the lag bolts are (4) 3/8" by 5" long with flat washers. The bolts and washers must be imbedded to mount the motor. Sorry about that first response.

Merc should fit

Kevin, I have a 4-stroke 9.9HP Mercury Bigfoot Sailpower with 25 inch shaft on my 260 and have no problem tilting. I did remove the steering arm and convert the steering and controls to remote on the pedestal. I connected the motor to the rudder post so that I can steer with the pedestal wheel. My only remaining problem is that Mercury does not yet offer a low pitch "workboat" prop for the bigfoot model that a slow moving sailboat needs to run the motor within the correct rpm range. I have been told that they will be offering them next year. I had a prop shop reduce the original pitch a couple of inches. That helped, but still didn't increase the top end rpm enough. Hope this helps - Good Luck Bernie

thanks a million

A thousand thankyous to everyone that contributed to this question. I am really so impressed by the effort that was extended to me here. I am going to get ahold of hunter and see about that extention. Eventually, i think we will add the remote unit for the motor, so removing that motor tiller will probably be in the future. What an amazing site! Thanks again to all of you!
