I picked up a 4 stroke, 6 hp Tohatsu a few weeks ago on Craigslist in anticipation of getting my Morgan underway after I got the deck refit finished.
I'm down to one lifeline, some minor hardware and the bungs on the port toerail and so decided to break out the new (to me) motor.
I changed the oil in the lower unit, touched up the paint, stuck it in a bucket and on the 3rd easy pull it started and ran. The guy I'd bought it from ran it for me the day I picked it up but that was weeks ago and I can't really remember yesterday.
Man, this thing is nice and quiet! and runs smooth. It'll be nice to not have to shout over my old Johnson.
My boat has a cut out (pic below) for the OB mount so the cockpit gets all the noise. Please ignore the new double mainsheet (bucket is excess line I haven't cut yet) and missing traveler, I don't want to start that battle up all over again.
I think I'll enjoy this new technology:D.

I bought a 5 hp 4-stroke last summer new for $650.

But it is a Briggs and Stratton air cooled and it is as loud as hell...

Gets me home when the wind dies.

Have fun with your new toy...

AIr cooled? that brings back memories. The old Sears Gamefisher motors were built that was and we sure had a lot of fun with the one we had!

Yep

B & S still makes them. For the price they are hard to beat. And the power seems to be more than the stated 5 hp. They also sip gas. I really like mine... but it is loud and shakes the hell out of the boat :)

I have a 4hp 4stroke with an integrated tank. Quiet, runs nice and no gas line in the cockpit.

Honda has an overhead valve 2 hp air cooled but I don't think anyone makes an air cooled overhead cam outboard engine.. If you know of an engine, these guys can make an outboard out of it.. http://www.godevil.com/GO-DEVIL_Engines.html
You're right, I meant valve not cam. I just rather not be messing with water pumps that can fail so air-cooled is my preferred no wind propulsion method.

My stolen Honda 7 1/2 HP was OHC, as was my Honda 9.8 HP. I think just about anything over about 5HP is OHC.

When I was looking at the Catalina 250 I ended up buying I wanted to see if the Tohatsu 9.8. (A 1998 as I recall) engine was stuck. It had sat for at least 2 years I know of and was not conected to any sort of fuel tank. I took a light pull on the starter cord, just enough to bring one piston up and down. I was rewarded with a "POP POP POP". I actualy had to hit the kill button. When I went down to bring the boat home, still no gas, I pulled the cord (I don't know why) and got the same thing. In use it takes barely one pull cold and barely half a pull warm. As far as the electric start, all I need too do is stare at it. Well, maybe not quite. but all it takes is a quick jab. I'm impressed with this engine
