I bought the motor used, and changed the lower gear oil for the first time. When I emptied the oil it smelled very bad (like a propane gas leak). I had to ventilate the garage the smell was so bad. This doesn't seem right, but I have had very little experience with outboards up to this point. Is this normal? Thanks.

Smell

Lower unit oil does have a different smell from other oils. Don't know that it smells like propane but it does have a strong smell.

Stinks

Yeah, lower unit oil really stinks after awhile. I guess that is why we call it "fossil fuel". Something dead that long just has to stink. *yks
