Hello,

My engine has started making a squeaking sound, I thought it was the alternator
so I repalced it but that wasn't it. My belt is new and plenty tight so that is not it.

It does not follow the speed of the engine, more or less random, each squeak is
a split second long, sometimes just one squeak, sometimes two in a row.

I call it a squeak, sometimes I want to call it a chirp. not really sure.
It is also running rough at times and vibrating more than it used to.

Other wise it's fine, starts quick, temp under load ok, acceleration ok, no smoke etc.....

Any one have any idea what is causing this sound ?

Thanks,

Pump

How about raw water pump could be making the sqeak maybe, try checking impeller and see if the pump is needing a new bearing in the pump.

Could be a bearing or shaft seal, etc. in the very early stages of failure.
Best is to 'hunt it down' by locating the sound with a 'stethoscope' .... just a long length of hose held to your ear; this will enable you to 'zone in' and keep on your 'watch list' for further developments.

I would hope your belts are not to tight. You could eat up the bearing in the water pump or alternator real quick. For the squeak try spraying some belt dressing on the belts had this same thing happen to my truck engine last year on engine pulley belt. The squeal has not returned. Belt were fine . Do not discount early sign bearing failure either especially if the pulley belts have been kept to tight.

Occasionally 'V' belts do squeak.
Happened to my car 50 years ago. Took it into the Ford dealership. The mechanic opened the hood and said start up. It squeaked. He said look away for a moment. I did so and the squeak stopped immediately.

Only after much cajoling did he admit to what he had done.
He had whipped out the dip stick and touched the end on each side of the fan belt - and put it back in the engine before I looked back.
Yes - it needed a tiny bit of oil!
"No charge Sir". I was 18.

Try this yourself.
BTW Fan belts are designed to resist small amounts of oil.

An exhaust manifold leak can make that type of noise. It is doubtful with the water cooled manifold but it is another item to check. If the manifold has any loose bolts or leakage at the head/manifold joint it can make that noise.

Thanks to all for your replies, this did start after sending the fresh water pump for rebuild and it came back with the pulley painted where the belt rides, maybe the
painted surface is causing the squeak until the paint wears off, I will put some oil on it, I will also listen to the eningine with a hose and check the exhaust manifold.

We had a "chirp" from ours Yanmar 2gm. It turned out to be the temp sender. The electrical contact came partially loose from the sensor itself.

well good news.

I lubed the belt and that did not fix it.
so I took some hose to listen to the engine and no matter where I put it all I could
hear was a very smooth running engine and no squeaking or rough running that I was hearing on the outside. not knowing what to do next just for kicks I pressed the hose up to the coolant tank and both the squeaking and rough running sound stopped.
I pressed the tank the other way and the sounds increased, I pressed it the other way and they stopped.

so either my coolant tank is loose on the bracket or the bracket is loose on the engine or both, will tighten down this weekend and hope to back to normal.

Thanks to all for your guidance.

Also take that hose and listen to 'just behind' the Crankshaft pulley ... There is a LARGE oil seal behind the crankshaft pulley assembly that because of its angled attitude (front of engine higher than rear end) often 'dries out' and then sometimes 'squeals'.
If this is the source of momentary 'squeal', simply remove the large 'nose bolt' from the center of the pulley and carefully 'slide' the pulley and its coupler off the 'nose' of the crankshaft, ... dont lose the 'key' when removing. Simply coat the seal with engine oil.
