After much research on the location for the new gauge water temerature sender, water hose installation for the temp sender and other possible locations, the answer was just in front of me. I removed the water inlet that seats on top of the engine and found 2 thermostats and the perfect place for my sender. One quick 3/8 hole and thread tapping minute later, I had the sender installed on the cover. Fits like a glove. That was quick, simple and cheap.

Jose,

You have got my interest - I have a 3QM30F. The previous owner had cut into the hose from the engine to the heat exchanger and created the abomination you can see in the attached picture. I could not accept that less than 10 inches of maybe 1.5 inch diameter hose should be replaced by 10 feet of 3/4 inch hose (engine to water heater and back) or that the thermostat should be exposed to the water temperature only after it returned through all that hose so I restored it to standard.

I would be interested to know where and how that water inlet fits in the scheme of things. Is your engine fresh water cooled?

Thanks,

John Brecher

Nice work, Guidera..
John, His is not fresh water cooled from what I see of the housing.. If you want a temp gauge on your fresh cooled engine, you could drill and tap the square box that is the thermostat housing.. the part that the hose hooks to on the heatex housing.. To make the hot water tank work, you can hook one of the small hoses to the thermostat housing, and the other to the suction side of the fresh water pump, preferably close to the pump.. that hose from the bottom of the heatex housing goes to the coolant pump suction. This will make a bypass flow to the tank while still having the big hoses for the main coolant flow.

Wow! John, that's a lot of iron on that engine. I 'll bet you could gain 1/2 a knot if you jettison all that galvanized pipe.
Don't feel bad. I lurked the aisles at H.D. this week end looking for fitting to make the same rig until I found the right part. Look at my other post "37 cutter instrument panel" In it I have posted pictures of the item you need to clean that pipe mess. It does the same thing, just in a more elegant way.
