Murray:

I have used the Dow795 on my fixed port plexiglass and it is no problem in applying. I just use masking tape. Apply the Dow795 with a caulking gun and smooth it down with a tool or your finger. Remove the tape once the product skins over and you are ready to go. I think the cure time is about 24 hrs.

.... I agree, you should get a prescription before you are allowed to purchase 5200.

After all, these items are also attached with mechanical fasteners, where are they going to go?

Roger: I am contemplating using 5200 to attach cleats onto my IP-38 to which I will attach teak dorades. Is the teak of your dorades attached to the fibreglass with 5200? Did you use any other fasteners? Did you you bond the bare wood or did you apply a primer or varnish to the teak first? How long has it been attached? Thabnks for any help you can provide.

Dow 795 is a non-structural sealant used for flush glazed joints. Dow 995 is a structural sealant used to adhere mounting components to the glazing surface prior to attachment and flush glazing, often with 795 because it is a little cheaper that 995. I design commercial, high-end residential and monumental skylights for a living. (If you've been to the National Zoo, you've seen my stuff). We don't recommend it for anything other than glass-glass or glass-aluminum joints. It will peel right off of painted metal after it's cured. Anodized is slightly better. For metal-metal (finished of not) we recommend polyurethane. That stuff never lets go. As far as sealing acrylic, be careful. As numb as it sounds, the grade of acrylic matters. El-cheapo "FF" acrylic can't be sealed with urethane but cast acryilic requires it. This is from our supplier, a major player in the sheet glazing world. So, check it out before you gun it.

You might consider the Weld Mount studs. They are very strong and can be installed in no time. The cleats could then be bolted to the deck via the weld mount studs.

The larger ones are holding my water heater in place..

Dow Corning describes the uses of Dow 795 as:

APPLICATIONS
• Structural and nonstructural glazing
• Structural attachment of many panel systems
• Panel stiffener applications
Just a bit curious as to where you got the idea that it is a non-structural sealant???
