My 2000 3GM30F Yanmar has 4 petcocks with hoses attached - 3 on the air filter side and 1 on the fuel filter side. When are these to be opened and drained off? If I winterize my engines using the raw water intake at the strainer, and, pump antifreeze throught the engine until it comes out the exhaust do I have to open and drain off these petcocks? If not when would these be used? Thank you for the information.

Petcocks for anti-freeze

The petcocks are used to drain the antifreeze that is in the block OF the engine. If you use the "pink stuff" on the raw water side, it will push out the raw water from the intake thru the heat exchanger, thru the muffler and out the exhaust. This is good because you will then be entirely winterized in the cooling system. But a word of caution. If you are in an extremely cold part of the country, the "pink stuff" will gel before it freezes. This may not be good. Hence, you may want to consider using the next level or "blue stuff" to winterize your raw water side. It's a couple more $$ per gallon, but since I use less than 2 gallons, I figure that I will have more protection against the icy cold. I started using the "blue stuff" two years ago as an extra protection. I still use the "pink stuff" for my domestic water system once I've drained it.

So then,....

if I'm following this correctly. Those 4 locations are to be used when I replace the coolant in the engine itself. Then just fill the reservoir until full. Can't the small faucet valve behind the waterheater be used to drain and replace the coolant for the engine also? Since it's lower than the 4 petcocks the engine would be completely drained out by using this. Thanks again.
