Another utilitarian print - A few weeks ago the dipstick holder on my Yanmar / Kanzaki transmission failed and I had to scramble to find a replacement. I figured it would be nice to have a spare in case it happens again, so I made this -

For anyone looking to make their own of these, I put the stl design file and details at Yanmar Kanzaki KM2P-1 Transmission Dipstick Holder by Davidasailor.

Nice! You are getting quite handy with the 3D printer

Yes, having fun and learning lots. Like how to design and print threads for example. Bonus points to anyone who can spot the defect in my first try at that.

Doh. LH threads.
Yep. I was all proud of how they came out. Checked the diameter with my micrometer and it matched the original perfectly. Brought it down to the boat and just couldn’t get it to screw in, for reasons I just couldn’t figure out at the time.

Have fun learning! I just got a spool of polycarbonate to learn how to print with that. The dipstick holder I printed before was PETG, which is safe up to about 185F. I’ve measured my transmission at up to 160. I figure that’s ok, but I’d like to have a wider margin. Polycarbonate is safe up to 235 which should be plenty safe. Unfortunately my first try warped and popped off the bed about 10% in, so I have the opportunity for more learning there.

Please keep us informed! Sovol had a primeday special on PLA so I plan to learn with that, then add different materials as needed. My longer term project - waiting for this fall when Escape comes out of the water and her mast is down - my original jib furler (profurl) top bearing has a worn bushing and the parts are NLA. My rigger found 1 bearing assembly in France! for $800... I think I can print a bushing and press it in for a lot less than replacing the whole furler. I can't be the only one with this problem.
