I got my 386 this July and because we had great wind on the Chesapeake Bay we hardly had to motor. Labor Day weekend was pretty still and the ouy 40 hp Yanmar got a good work out at 3600 rpms I was lucky to go 6 knots. Need to check a lot of things like the prop clean the bottom etc. Does anyone have any other suggestions to bring it up to hull speed of 7.7 knots.

if you were working off your knotmeter, it could be fouled as well. I take my transducer out each time to keep it clean. Likethe other guys said, cross check it with the gps. I can also tell a huge difference when the bottom is dirty. After a fresh cleaning it will get over 7 kts easily. The boat also performs much better with a little heel. Try flying the main when you motor for an added boost. Brian

Hull Speed Overrated
Check all the stuff you suggest. I know I'm down nearly a knot with a bottom that is scrubbed monthly, But, I dove on it and it isn't nearly what I would call 'good' as my dive service rates it. Also, I have a 40.5. My neighbor also does. Side by side, same boat, same instrument; he shows 8.0 knots to my 6.7. So, calibration is a real issue as well. In any event, pushing a boat to hull speed isn't exactly the optimum use of most sailing vessel powerplants. Good luck, you're on the right track IMHO. Rick D.

Hi Paul - Congratulations on your new boat, hope she serves you well. I have a 2000 380 with same configuration and I run 6.6knts at 3200 rpm on flat, no wind, no current Pamlico Sound. This is measured with the SOG from GPS. I am very happy with that as I have the standard 2 blade factory prop. I do have a dive service clean the bottom 6 times a year, mostly in warmer seasons. I'm with Rick, that hull speed is way overrated. We were with the wind and tide coming in Beaufort Inlet Labor Day and GPS read 9.2 SOG at Ft. Macon. I know what a bug feels like going down a drain, as we were sucked into the inlet. It was GREAT...
