Am moving up from 380 to 460. Making the jib self tending. Anxious to see how this works out. Also, installing an Espar heating system. Will keep all posted on progress. Expected delivery 6/15/00John
Good choice!! That's pretty quick delivery if you just ordered it.What are they going to do to make the jib self-tacking? Is it on a track? I assume that the jib would also then be smaller than the original design. Is that right??Is the Espar going to be forced air or hot water? Tell us what other options you are putting on it.ROwen
Another day or two and my 460 should be ready to go.The steering is very very stiff and binds. It is almost impossible to turn the rudder at the emergency tiller location. The dealer suggests that once the boat is sailed, that the steering will resolve itself quickly. I have my doubts. Hopefully I am wrong.I have told the dealer that the boat is not sailable in its current condition. I expect that if we steered primarily with the autopilot, that we would burn out the autopilot motor. In addition, the engine would not start. They are still working that bug out.
John:Congratulations on the new boat and thanks for letting me sit on it at Sail Expo. There is an article in the current issue of Practical Sailor May 15, 2000 Vol 26 -No.10. I looked at the Dehler 41 last year and their boats have this setup with a roller furling. Looks like the ticket to me. If you are going to be sailing in the estuary this will be perfect. Most of the time you will not need any more sail in the bay than the self tender would provide. I assume that you can unfurl the jib beyond the self tending position and use it like a conventional jib?
I have a 460 in Alameda - it would be nice to take a look at how you are setting up your boat to see what improvements I can make. I will be looking at a heater so I'm very interested in how this was installed. No experience with your jib setup but this sounds interesting as I short-hand sail a lot.Can you forward me an email so maybe I could see about visiting your boat someday? yodaveyo@msn.comThanks!
Yes, the jib will be on a track. Harken is getting involved. Am doing away with the staysail. The Espar will be forced air. Radar, chartplotter, electric heads with Lectra-San.Was purchased two weeks prior to Sail Expo in Oakland, CA., hence the boat was already in stock.John
Dave,I sent you an email, hope you get it. In short the boat is still at Crusing Specialists until mid June. Then I'll be a Grand Marina until early July, then off to Mexico to do the 91 day yacht club thing then back to Grand Marina.John
It would really concern me if my dealer told me that a steering bind might resolve itself once the boat is in the water. You might want to get a second opinion from Hunter customer support at 800-771-5556. I've worked with Greg Emerson and Eddie Bree and they're both fabulous. .......... Hey, all these big Hunters in San Francisco bay! We really ought to get together some day. Not next week, though; I'll be hauled out at Grand Marina. Giving the 410 a few presents for its second birthday.
Under Hunters direction, the dealer pulled the rudder and replaced certain bearings. At the dock, it is possible to turn the wheel with a baby finger. Underway, the load is much greater. The engine starting problem was also solved. The next major problem has been keeping batteries charged. A few hours after we unplug from shore power, our voltage drops below 12 volts. They are still working on solving that issue. i will keep you posted.Warren.
