380 info

We are thinking of purchasing a Hunter 380. This would be our first sail boat, being recent offshore powerboat converts. We would like to hear comments from owners of this model, and suggestions.Thank-you.

It Depends

Bernie, I both agree and disagree with Steve. I have had a 310, 340, and now a new 380. We just recently saw the 356, and as great as it looks, it IS NOT a 380. If you are into cruising for distance or live-aboard or have a family, the 380 is far superior. It is more stable in the water, has a far better aft cabin, and, once you throw in air conditioning, refrigeration, extra batteries etc., it still has lots of storage. As a non-racer, I found the 356's monsterious cock-pit locker (port-side) to be useless for other than a spare bedroom for my mother-in-law. You are not far from me if you would like to have a look at our 380. Give me a shout...scottb@thepostshop.com

Bernie:I have a 1996 376 which is the same hull as the 380.During my search, I looked at many manufacturers and boat lengths, and never found anything that came close to the Hunter as far as "Bang for the Buck".Specifically, the 376 was more liveable with more amenities like a superior aft cabin, than any comparable boat. Compared to the slightly shorter Hunter models, it was more than just a little bit better. If it in your budget, I would definitly go for te 380.Additionally, as I have become familier with friends and acquaintences boats since my purchase, I still like mine better.Good Luck.....Jeff

We Love Ours

We love our 1999 380, it has been everything we hoped for. We've taken two and three week cruises, been all over New England, and cruise with two kids and two dogs, plus do lots of days sails and short trips to nantucket and back from Cape Cod. The boat has great room and is safe, though needs to be reefed early to prevent weather helm.There is alot written about them in the archives here on HOW, plus owners write reviews too which you can read up on as well.
