Depending on your sailing plans
The 386 has less enclosed storage space than the 38. The open shelves on the 386 would probably have to be cleared off for sailing. The 38 also has open shelves, but not as much as the 386. The 386 has the old style built in fridge & freezer and the 38 has front opening slide-in units, with a much smaller fridge capacity. The 386 has companionway steps that need to be evaluated closely in terms of their safety while underway. Consider the 38's companionway steps also in this regard. If you plan to do trips of at least a week's length with four people on board, determine if either of these boats have adequate capacity for your equipment and provisions. The slightly older Hunter Legend 37.5 might be another boat for you to consider if you plan on making week long trips. It has much greater storage capacity than either of these boats, fridge and freezer capacity equal to the 386, and companionway steps that are very safe. You can see lots of pictures of all three of these boats both here and on Yachtworld.
