I am refurbishing the staysail boom. Took all the SS parts off because of paint bubbling etc, painted it ( pics to follow) and now will start reassembly.

Question: On the gooseneck fitting on the boom where it bolts to the part attached to the stay, there is about a 1/2" gap or space on either side of the bolt, so the boom can be twisted somewhat. In other words, the thin verticle piece attached to the stay, can kind of rattle around on the horizontal bolt going thru the end of the gooseneck. OK, that wasn't a question. This is a question: is that the way to rig it, or should there be washers or "spacers" installed on either side of the gooseneck bolt to tighten things up?

Can you believe it? I actually understood the question. And you are right Scott, it does seem loose. But I don't recall it being so loose as to be a problem or even a question. So I am wondering if you have wear that I don't have.

To level set we are discussing where the forward end of the boom attaches to the mid-stay. There is an aluminum forging that has a groove that fits over the stay. It is shaped such that the boom end goes in the slot. Then there is a hefty bolt, about 5/16" or is it 3/8"? Mine has a fiber lock nut. There are no washers or shims. The tab on the boom probably has at least 3/32" of slop on that bolt. It just never concerned me.

Ed your response was right on

so I know you have the same set up. I don't see any wear on the bolt or on the stay fitting, but it sure is "floppy"without any consequences I can determine.

Scott, it would be easy enough to put a couple of stainless washers in there as shims. I am racking my brain to think if there is a reason that you would want or need that much play. I wonder if Rig-Rite knows anything about that setup?

I have that sleeve set higher on the stay by using a 'C' clamp under it. That is so that I can get that front hatch open more without the boom knocking it closed.

I would be worried about getting rid of all the slop. I think you want some there to prevent fatigue on the stay and its fittings. I wonder if Mr. Cherubini Jr. would have some ideas.

My stay fitting kept sliding down and jamming on the swage and this was a major nuisance when hoisting so I put on a hose clamp as a preventer. I do not have a winch to tension the staysail haliard and sweating it didn't pull the bag out of the blown out sail. I attached a three part downhaul to the tack fitting and can now easily and quickly tension the luff, thus controling draft. To avoid hauling the sail too high (boom hits the mast) I whipped a piece of coloured line onto the haliard at the point where it exits the mast when at max height.
