I am doing all new rigging, upgrading to 5/16" with swage-less fittings. I would like to remove the back stay adjuster in order to make the seating area more comfortable.
Do I need the adjuster? When would I ever use it?
What about the additional rigging line on each side of the mast that is adjustable up and down the side rail? Do I need this?
Looking at another 37c moored near mine that does not have these.
I have limited experience with rigging and I would not like to make a mistake out of ignorance. I feel that if I install the new upgraded rigging and tune it, it should not need these additional components.

Most skippers with backstay adjusters who have issues with seating and head banging sometimes fail to recognize that raising the adjuster to a much higher position will allow continued use of the adjuster as well as fix the head banger. Also, put two turnbuckles at the transom instead of one at the split.

You need the turnbuckle on the back stay to adjust your mast to vertical/ slightly raked back. If you have a hand wheel or hydraulic "back stay adjuster, it is wasted on the masthead cutter rig. The running back stays are to stabilize the mast when you fly the staysail.

please clarify Bill

Sorry Bill, not sure I understand. I have the hand wheel adjuster, I do not have a staysail. I am running a 120% Genoa and converting my main to furling main. So if I understand you correctly I remove the hand wheel and the running back stays?

I was thinking of converting one of the running backstays as a hoist for the dingy to get it out of the water and away from petty thieves.

Will take photo tomorrow. Dark here now. We sail as sloop also, but we have staysail halyard as well as spinnaker halyard. Both would do to lift dingy. Our running backs were wire to near the deck with 4:1 tackle. Not suitable for lifting dingy. Not enuff hoist to cope with bridle.

The original H37C did not have the "wheel". This is a feature that a previous owner probably added. If you want to maintain a traditional backstay with a turn buckle.

I think you would be better off getting a dingy davit setup to move the dingy out of "harms" way.

We use davits, but we coastal cruise. We are careful about weather when we go out into the Atlantic or open Gulf of Mexico.

Midnight Sun has a backstay adjuster. It is a Barbarossa/Harken which uses a winch handle, and is completely out of the way. I must disagree that it "wasted" on a masthead rig, cutter or not. We tighten or loosen our backstay over three inches. It removes headstay sag and greatly improves up hill performance. It also allows us to unload the rig when we are not sailing.
