How much are they asking for the boat? You are probably looking at lots of work or maybe $20,000. Is it worth it?

The boat would have to be free or nearly so. Talking about major costs. Sure the rudder is bent($2000.) but what did those forces do to the stern area?

At our marina there are people who are qualified to give an opinion. Like the guy that contracts for all the fiberglass repairs. Maybe you can find that guy. I think it has to be seen by an expert.

Terry, the wording of your proposed course of action leads me to believe you are not a fiberglass wizard. IMHO this project would be a really difficult first lesson.

It will almost certainly cost you more to repair this boat than it would cost to buy one in functioning condition. Used boat prices are in the toilet but repair and material costs are as high as ever.

I wouldn't take it free. If they will give you some money to take it away, maybe, but you'll still spend nearly as much and a lot of time working when you could have been sailing.

Look how much work there can be on a boat that was laid up last fall in fully functional condition:

Having put a lot of work on our H37c (including deck recore), I can say that the next boat I buy will be in pristine condition (meaning the only thing to do is upgrading some areas). You want to be able to enjoy your boat doing what it does best, sailing, not spending all your free time rebuilding it...

What kind of skills do you have to start with ?

I saw a Hunter 37 for sale someplace near Dallas, on e-bay
It looked pretty good, at least compared to the one you had your eyes on
Last I saw it a couple of days ago was still available
Here in Houston I see lots and lots of boats for sale, let me know if yoiu would like me to keep my eyes peeled for one

After having spent over fifty grand repairing Midnight Sun last year from just being hit, and replacing the rudder, my advice is to buy the boat if you can for no more than a thousand dollars, sell the lead keel for three, and part the rest out to the rest of us crazy Cherubini fans. If the rig survived and the motor works, there is a lot more money there.
