removehtml]I have taken the boom apart for overhaul and paint. This was driven by the need to unfreeze the outhaul. The problem turned out to be that the sheave at A was jammed due to corrosion of the block and too tight a shackle that the line is attached to. The shackle was pinching the cheeks of the block against the sheave. My questions are: 1) Do I really need a 4 times purchase for this outhaul, would maybe times 2 be enough? The less spaghetti there is in there the better. 2) Has anyone replaced the wearing surface inside the goose neck at D where it goes around the stay, if so what did you use? For anyone who wishes to know - The block at A attaches to the bail bolt at the fore end of the boom, the block at B has the wire outhaul attached to it, D is the goose neck at the forward end of the boom and C the line that exits the forward end of the boom. Taking it apart was a bear as every screw had to be drilled out. Next job is to strip it and then take it in for painting.Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

I use my outhaul twice a per year, relax in the fall to remove the sail and tighten in the spring after bending on. So for me 2:1 is more than sufficient. But if you regularly adjust and the sail is in the slot(not loose-footed) then I think you will want the 4:1. For the gooseneck I have seen small clear tubing slit to make a shim. Or when you upgrade the rigging you could move up to 9/32 from 1/4. You can test this on the backstay which is 9/32". You probably know that a lot of the parts are still available from Rig-Rite, link below.

I have no stays'l boom on Raven. One of the PO's removed it and it's now loose-footed, as thay say. No purchase on the sheet either, just a straight run thru the deck organizer to a cabin-top winch.

Are we to understand that your sheet comes off the clew and straight to a deck organizer or cheek block? Or down to a block on the traveler and then back? And you can actually trim the stayail with that arrangement? If so then it would make a conversion to a furling staysail pretty simple.

So Richard. We see the sheet, the deck organizer, and a block forward of the mast. That part is exactly like mine. Except my sheet is attached to the end of the boom through a 4:1 setup. But yours is directly to the clew of the sail? And you have just the 1:1 purchase? Sure like to know how well that works.

Measurements ?
I have been trying to replace the stays'l boom on my 37c that a P.O. got rid of. A lot of good pictures were posted here last summer when I asked some questions. The pictures in this thread help too. I think I've almost figured out everything I need. Can any of you give me the measurements for the exact length of the boom and the diameter? Thanks
