The 83 Hunter I am looking at has a 4 e cyl Yanmar engine. Any one have experienc with that engine?

Well...

A 4 cyl Yanmar is one of the most popular engines in sailboats today, but that make many different models that are 4 cyl. Just about every Hunter over 40' has a 4 cyl Yanmar. Do you have a specific question?

Probably not much experience. . .

out there with that engine. Do you think it was repowered? I thought the 3QM30 was the last generation Yanmar used on the H37C. Did any Hunter come standard with that motor? I would give Hunter a call for some history. Then maybe talk with Mack Boring or Torresen(link below) about that particular engine. I'm surprised there was room for a 4-banger.

How about a 3JH3E

I just replaced my 3QM30 (27 HP) with a 3JH3E (40 hp). The new engine is smaller and lighter than the old one. It's much shorter in height, about the same in depth, and maybe a tad wider. The width makes it so the alternator is nearly touching the sound insulation. I'm not sure if the 4 cylinder models are any wider, but if they are, it may not fit.

Yes

My 1984 37C came with a 4 cylindar Yanmar. It is a very tight fit. Last summer I had to replace the starter. In order to do so, I had to cut an access door in the aft state room wall. Fortunately the starter just barely fit between the exhaust manifold and the fuel tank. Even though the fit is tight, everything else is fairly accessible. The extra power, in hearing other's experiences, does not provide any more speed (max 7.0 knots as measured by my GPS). But I have to believe that the extra power does drive through heavy weather better. I have a fixed 3 blade prop (15RH14). The only work I have done on the engine is had the torque on the head bolts checked (were OK) at about 600 hours. I am very, very happy with the engine.

Now that makes me mad!

It wasn't enough that Hunter saw fit to obsolete my 2QM20 with the 3QM30. Then they felt that wasn't enough and went to a 4e. Aren't those over 50hp?! Maybe I can put a second 2QM in there. :)

40 HP...

without the turbo, alittle more with a turbo (I forget exactly). I don't have the turbo. (Sorry Ed). Bob "Gusty Getaway"
