hello all sailors
we are going to bare-boat charter this easter in the abaco's. the only charter available was from 360 yachting charters out of florida. they have boats along the bahamian islands and are called 360 b/c they specialize in one way charters. get it, only half a circle. they will deliver boats to any island along the bahamas. the have a 2002 44 voyage called spellbound . has anyone chartered with them before or know the boat. your comment are greatly appreciated, as we have had many good charters and our fair share of not so good.
thanks for your responses

Mainecat has 41 and several 30's in Abaco, and they are great-boats well maintained, and the 41 we chartered a few years ago was screamingly fast and very comfortable.

360 is full circle. Maybe they should change their name to 180. :)

chuck, thanks for the reply. i reserved a 44 voyage, large family trip. just not familiar with this outfit. since they have no base in marsh harbor, i'm a little bit concerned. also, there is no daily ins. rate waiver. skippers are liable for 2% of hull value. i know this is standard for an owners charter ins. policy. most charters i've had in the past have offer an additional policy so that they can cover deductibles. thanks again frank

Hello from 360 Yachting ! If you all don't mind if we also comment..... We named ourselves 360 Yachting because 6 years ago, out of 300+ name options, we thought this was catchy and we ran a marketing survey and everyone liked the name. We also provide the full realm of services for our charterers and boat owners, such as management, maintenance, repairs, reporting, education/training/coaching, refits, installations etc.

We did not name the company after the one way optional trips. As a newer company we needed to come up with a promotional service that nobody else really offers and that is our signature $360 one way upgrade. Since the Keys and Exumas are pretty much linear (as apposed to circular) cruising grounds, offering our charterers the inexpensive option of going one direction has proven to be appealing to them. We will also preposition a yacht, such as this one in Marsh Harbor for the same fee. As a delivery skipper, my regular fee basis for such a trip would be 3 to 4 times more expensive, plus the boat owners want to usually be paid for the time the boat is used. So a 24 - 36 hour delivery would normally cost someone up to about $2000 when all things are included such as airfare, provisions, fuel, capt fee, etc. It cost us much more than we bill the customer for this service, so we have to have limitations. We do not pay for dockage while the boat is away from its base marina, so charterers are informed that they will have to pay for any dockage before and after the charter if it picked up or delivered to or from a remote marina. This is explained verbally during the reservation process and in writing on our charter agreements under the prepositioning paragraph.

We also informed this charterer during the reservation process that we normally operate from our base in Eleuthera for sailing the Exumas and that there were other companies in the Abacos. We are not sure why he did not rent from Moorings or Sunsail, but are happy to offer our boat if the prepositioning terms are acceptable to customer. We are guessing that the other companies may have been booked up, as it was Easter Week.

Lastly, it is difficult to service customers at remote locations and we make this as clear as we possibly can and take extra care that our yachts are great operating condition so that service calls are minimized. We also have to be very meticulous in the orientation process, so that any service call costs are assigned to the responsible party. This is really a necessity of the geographic challenges of the region. Simply put it is simpler to sail in the Abacos and BVI because of the Geography. To sail the Bahamas Outislands, Exumas, and other remote open ocean regions, charterers have to have higher qualifications. Moorings writes in its advertising that one does not have to be a seasoned sailor to rent their boats. We advertised and make it clear that you do have to be a seasoned sailor. we use the US Sailing Bareboat Test as an objective qualification for our charterers.

Thank you for the opportunity to post our input. Happy Sailing! 360yachting.com

Hopefully the OP will check back and let us know how the charter went.

Always good to have alternatives to the big guys.

Do not deal with these people as a charter guest or owner. In the 3 weeks they had my yacht they abused her badly. In addition they will not account for the over $10,000 that is missing from my operating "Trust" account. Very bad customer service and extremely bad maintenance.

Mr. Mackenzie has made slanderous and misleading comments about our company and services that are completely unfounded. He clearly breached a written management agreement and took his boat without informing us or even emailing a complaint of any sort. We started work on his boat and he took it away before we could complete the work (between charters), and he blames everything on us. Had he made a reasonable and respectful attempt to communicate with us before taking damaging action, the situation would have turned out quite different. We worked hard on his boat, we did everything we could do in the time frame available. We successfully booked many charters on his boat. He believes he is right in slandering us all over the internet and we may have to take him to court to keep our reputation clean from malicious comments made by him. On our books he still owes us about $4000 for services rendered.

If it is true, it is not slander...

but please can you to, take it off line...Perhaps the OP will chime in and give his perspective...

Chartering is hard enough, from both perspectives,

been there and done that ...it is even tough here in the states where you can get to the boat.

If it is verbal it is slander if it is written it is libel. As such you can resolve this in a court of law. You can resolve nothing here.

Hi, I have been cruising the web and noticed this conversation about 360 yachting. About a year ago I spent $12,000+ including travel on a charter of a sailing catamaran which was completely unfit for sailing and a year later I have no remedy other than these forums whcih Jay Phillips of 360 yachting, spends lots of time manipulating and denying. At least it keeps him busy.

FYI - my original letter to Jay follows:

Hello Jay,

So we are all back safe and sound. In the end we enjoyed two days of sailing, one day of motoring with one engine (no winds) and a total of two days waiting for TDD to be readied and repaired enroute. After some heated discussion the crew has asked me to negotiate another charter next year with 360 yachting rather than accept $150 back per person from our $1500 per person total expenses.

I was reluctant to go in this direction after hearing you accept no responsibility for our troubles and blaming the propellor company for a boat that was clearly not fit to charter even after us waiting one full day for it to be readied. In essence you said the boat was charter ready and if this is the case I expect that your other boats will be similarfly prepared. When your response is "that is sailing" it leads me to believe that you do not pay attention to maintenance and safety issues as I/we had more maintenance issues in five days on TDD than I have had in many years of sailing.

So before negotiating another charter I want to list the problems with TDD - all that I can remember anyway.

1. Engine propellor problems.
2. Several interior lights burned out.
3. Navigation lights burned out.
4. Steaming light burned out.
5. Anchor rode severly frayed.
6. Stbd jib sheet frayed.
7. Cockpit cushions not securable and hazardous when moving about.
8. Water tanks not filled.
9. No charts.
10. No handbearing compass
11. No cruising guide.
12. No handheld radio.
13. No spot GPS.
14. No dish towels.
15. Only two coffee cups.
16. BBQ not operational and without a stand to attach to rail.
17. No BBQ lighter.
18. All heads had back flow problems.
13. Both aft heads never worked properly.
14. Auto valve on PRT bilge pump completely broken - unable to manually drain bilge to remove fuel smell.
15. Forward heads had trimming falling off of both doors.
16. Hinges broken on STB forward cabin.
17. Hinges broken on anchor locker.
18.One air conditioner not working - only needed on one warm night - our last.
19.Stack Pack was torn.
20. Stack Pack rod drifted forward by 2 feet so that head sail could not be moved across the mast without manual assistance.
21. Traveller shackle broken when we boarded - did not notive until first use. Had to rob another shackle.
22. Main sheet shackle detached from the boom requiring nylon line repair.
23. All other shckles required maintenance.
23. Reefing lines mislabelled.
24. No flashlights.
25. Absolutely no tools aboard- not a screwdriver or a pair of pliers.
26. And then there was the outboard motor which lasted a total of 4 or 5 hours.

This is all I can remember at this time but I am sure I will remember a few more. Several items were repaired and provided (1, 2, 3, 9, 12, 16, 24, 25, 26) once we identified them but if this is standard practice for the skipper and crew to be responsible for reminding the charter of numerous deficiencies then another charter with 360 yachting is out of the question.

If you feel that your company can provide a safe and sound boat next year at the same time then we are interested in chartering two in the Bahamas for a total of 10-12 crew. I am the cruising director for our local club and would like to report a favorable experience in terms of how we are dealt with rather than what to this point has been far from it.

We are looking at 10 days around the end of February 2012 and two monohuills 40+ feet. A satisfactory resolution would be for you to provide us "two for one" and that the recent crew receive a free charter as long as we purchase a second charter of the same duration.

Awaiting your response.

Frank McGrath
