I'm getting a new headsail for my 36-2. I'm not sure what size to get as the one that came with the boat was shortened down to get another year out of it. I have a roller furling. I think the old one was a 135%, but also thinking it might have been a 150%. I also have a center board.

What is the normal headsail for this boat, or does anyone have any recommendations about an "abnormal" headsail?

Looking to do some racing, but 98% of the time I'm just cruising. I'll probably be getting a heavier sail 8 oz (?) because I have an asymetrical for light winds, and I'd like to be able to use this new headsail in storm conditions if needed.

First time post after a long spell of just reading!

Regards all,

Michael

If it helps, I got a 130 for my 36-2 because it is hard to furl a 150 down enough for heavier weather conditions and still keep a good shape. But then I do not race mine (well that is not quite true- I still trim up when there is another boat going the same way).

I will say the boat seems to perform well with the 130 in a variety of conditions.

Hey Crashflow....
I sail with a 150. Also used a 135 for a summer after a friend from this site sent it my way..... Thanks Dave. Anyway, in sustained winds over say 17 knots with gusts to 20+ I find the 150 to be too much for the boat, however it is great for winds 17 and below. The 135 is great in heavy winds, but I find I'm leaving something on the table when the wind drops. I bought a new furler last season (Schaefer) and will get a new 150 made and cut to be able to reef down better. Of course the shape will not be perfect however reefed I have had the boat going over 7 easy. The boat has some weather helm with the 150 in heavy winds.
Where in Brooklyn do you keep your boat? I am out in Mt. Sinai...

Thanks guys. I was talking with Dave, and he's got me convinced I should get a 135, but then I start thinking about the kinds of winds I actually sail in most of the time, and I lean toward the 150. I mean if the wind is really blowing and I'm reefed down hard, I might not point that well to windward, but at that point, if I really need to go hard against the wind, there's always the engine. There's lee shores to consider, and gales, but how often am I planning on being in those conditions in the next couple years...not real often.

So funny how two different people with the same boats and a ton of experience will opt for a different approach - makes it real tough for a near novice to choose.

Thanks again,

Michael
