356 weaknesses

Apparently there is a rib/stiffener there that was not installed in a few boats. Not a structural issue per se - the hull there flexes if you put a boat stand there

Is it possible to inspect for this rib to determine if it is there, or did it start to be added at a certain hull #?

My hull number is 296 and I do not have the problem. I am pretty sure the model that had the problem I am familiar with is an earlier hull and possibly a 2002 model. I don't think it took a lot to fix it. They removed the fiberglass pan for the shower and added the rib and reglassed in the pan. It was due to the lack of the stiffening rib in that location. Was more of a dimple in the hull as I remember.

My 2 cents... Buy the boat, you won't find a better boat in this class. Been offshore with it many times and handled very well. Had my through hulls replaced, don't have the hull problem, hull #254. Do not have a in-boat generator, but use the Honda 2000 for any needs, mostly hot water now that I have wind/solar on the boat. Use 6 GC2 batteries for 660 Ahrs in the house bank, 200 Ahrs for the start side. Have inmast main and roller jib. So easy my wife takes the boat out by herself.... What the hell am I doing here?

Jim Campbell used to do a lot of surveys for the Hunter dealer at Whitneys marina, now Fleming Island marina where I've kept my boat for 16 years. They are no longer a Hunter dealer, but I heard many times he had a good reputation as a surveyor. I've crewed on several 356's and really enjoyed sailing them. The only complaint I ever heard was that some of the early models developed some gelcoat spider cracking around the toerails.

We have not had this problem nor have I ever heard of it until now. I would assume your survey this past Friday confirmed this issue for you.

Well the boat busted survey
It had the hull issue beneath the shower, I was prepared to have that fixed, but the decks pegged out the moisture meter in spots.
Those two things put together were just too much, still kind of in shock

Wow, this is very disappointing for you. First I've heard of a H356 having moisture issues. the previous owner must have not taken very good care of it...

moisture meters are dangerous things and give a lot of false "wet" reading

on my survey the meter said my hull was wet, the only thing is that the section it said it was wet was solid fiberglass and couldn't have been wet and all it was reading was a bulkhead tabbing

I have a bad port side list. The generator and batteries are in the port locker. I wouldn't think it would make the boat heel over though. Any suggestions?

List

Well when my 2007 H-36 the dealer added lead to the starboard side behind
and that was their answer but I never liked that,6 months later I removed the lead and moved the 2-4D's and put them under the starboard saloon table side.
You can see how Jim Seamans did it on his web page.
I forget his web page with lots of great info and just look here in boat info or
modifications or do search either Jim seamans or boat name Java.
Any way I moved the batteries and only needed to buy the plastic battery box's
with all the factory heavy cables working but now have 4-6 volt batteries which work really good.

Nick's right. Why anyone adds lead that is NOT a battery to their boat is not too smart.

So moving the batteries and maybe a little weight distribution on the starboard side is about all I can do? Is it not too challenging to move the batteries?
Thanks

I would if you really wanted you would start a thread called "H36 listed to 1 side"

But for what its worth I don't believe 100-200# of batteries should make a 36' boat noticeably list (I can sit on my rail and the boat doesn't noticeably list). Are sure your mast is straight?

This should be a new thread. I had a 1* list to port with our generator in port locker. With that huge port cockpit locker on these boats easy to overload that side of the boat. I put my tools, nuts and bolts, spare parts etc. on starboard side and problem was solved. The holding tank is on starboard side as well so if I let it fill I'll probably have a 1* list to starboard now. We try to distribute the stores and gear to trim the boat, I think everyone does that. We are living aboard so may be easier with all that we carry.

Gen & Batteries

It's the Gen & Batteries together that makes the difference and that caused the list and the dealer added 300 lbs to make it balance.
It wasn't that big a deal moving the batteries and snake the cables was not hard at all or just add extra weight like water or some thing heavy.
I removed the batteries and very large battery box and did add a small battery for the Gen and engine starting and moved the batteries 4-6 volt batteries which fit nicely under the long starboard seat with 2 new plastic battery box for 2 -6 volt batteries in each box.
I ran the factory cables from the 1/2 battery switch under floor to starboard side and also ran heavy wire from alternator to this new house bank.
Check out Java's web page for photo's and all info making the change.

Thanks to all. I'll try moving the batteries soon. Just bought this beautiful model. I stepped up from a 29.5. I'm sure to enjoy.

H356 busted survey

Don't let that survey stop you as there are several other H356"s for sale in Florida. After owning several other boats in the past,I can honestly say Hunter did an outstanding job in the design and build of the H356.
Buy one and you will see for yourself.
