356 Leech Line

Has anyone come up with a way to reach and lock down the leech line on a 356 with an in mast main. I too have experienced significant leech flutter at about 16 knots of wind. It is a pain to get to the leech line especially if you have the two piece bimini. I did stretch out this afternoon and was able to tighten the leech line which stopped the flutter however after a few minutes the leech line worked free of the jam cleat and the flutter was back. The jam cleat does not apper to do a good job in keeping the leech line locked tensioned. Marc

Marc, I agree. The design sucks. I finally tied mine around the jamb cleat. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

How agile are you?

I used a no wind day in the slip to move the boom to one side with the traveler, then climbed out on the outside of the arch to check ours. A marina service tech had adjusted it and we sailed it to check that it was not fluttering. Then I marked it with a magic marker where the knot was located in the jam cleat.

How to reach the leech line

I just had a new vertical batten sail made and one of the nice things they added was a long leech line with an exposed stopper at the clew. I can reach it easily from the cockpit seats as long as the boom is close to the inside of the boat. Way, way better than climbing up the arch. If I still had my UK sail I'd cut off the pocket covering the stopper and add a piece to the leech line until I could reach it.
