I have a 2003 Hunter 356? What maintenance should be done for the in-mast furling? I have check all the lines and was wondering if grease / WD 40 / or general oil is required to keep it in working order?

Grease the gears

the owner's manual recommends a special grease be applied to the furling gears at both top and bottom of the mast. I don't have the name of the grease with me now, but it came with the boat from my dealer. You might try going on the Seldon site and ask them. I usually apply a good dollop each year on the lower gears, but have not ventured up the mast to do it up there in the two years we have owned the boat. Starting to feel guilty about that actually.

Al, it's not the toop of the mast you need to grease, the upper bearing is the assembly you attach the halyard to-grease it, like the lower bearing, before you install the sail

Chuck, you're right...

I just got out my manual (which I should have done in the first place) and there are two sets of bearings (upper and lower) - Thanks for pointing this out to me. I still need to grease the upper bearings. For Sedna: I will provide some info from the manual, but you should probably obtain a "Furlin' Main Furling & Reeding System" manual to see the drawings. (e-mail address shown in the manual is SeldenUS@quick.com) "Maintenance should be undertaken at least once a year. All bearings should be greased with FURLIN' GREASE (Part No. 312-501), a tube of which is delivered with the mast." HALYARD SWIVEL(at top of mast). Grease the bearings by pressing grease directly into the recesses of the bearings by rotating the rings. This is best done when the swivel is opposite the sail feed inspection hole. FURLIN' GEAR. Remove the upper oval plastic plug. Lift the rubber boot, and grease the upper bearing on the roller mechanism. Remove the loser oval plastic plug level with the Reefing Wionch and on the side of the mast. Grease the bevel gears, and the ball bearing. Have fun. Al
