How much chain did you add to your 356 and new 36,did it really help holding and movement at anchor, what other improvements did you make.

No less than 1/2 the boat length

Remember the anchor is only as good as the chain you attach to the anchor. Some authorities say the the boat length in my experience 1/2 the boat length is sufficent.

Nick, I went all chain 275ft and have no problems

It helps with the movement because now my scope is less and the bow handles the extra weight without problems.

Here is a link to Fortress. Interestingly, anchor manufacturers tend to recommend less chain than cruisers believe is adequate. Probably a function o both cruiser comfort and experience. In any event, they have a vested interest in safe and confident anchoring using their products, and I suspect from rigorous testing. RD

356 chain

Nick, I went with one boat length, and while we haven't done before/after testing, we certainly seem to have no problems setting our 35lb delta, and we've ridden out some pretty good blows.

40ft chain and 35lb CQR

After switching to this combo, we haven't dragged and the swinging has diminished greatly. Jim S/V Java

Boat length is the minimum

After many years of cruising I think 1.5 times the boat length is what I have ended up with. While one may work it was only when I went past the boat length that I was happy with the anchor. Main problem is tide and what it can do with your anchor. Also in extreme situations less has caused huge anchors of 35lbs or more to drag in nice sandy bottoms. Never had a problem since I went to 1.5 times boat length.

Agree with KennyH re chain length but then we typically anchor in deeper water than those on the east coast (except for maybe Main and northward). I've been using a Delta 35# with 45ft of 5/16 HT on our H35 for a number of years and it's pretty much a no-brainer, but not totally. If I made a change it would be to a 44# Delta which goes against Lewmar who says the 35# is the heaviest they'd recommend http://en.lewmar.com/products/index.aspx?lang=1&template_id=5&page_id=1&sub1=11&sub2=63. I'd feel more comfortable with an additional 9# in the anchor and I don't think the additional weight would significantly impact anything except when weighing anchor. Currently I don't have a windless installed but there is one sitting on the workbench the garage with a 5/16 HT gypsy. On the down-side, the bow roller and chain-stopper on my boat are probably not designed to handle the load of such an anchor but they could be beefed up. For recommendations, if chain goes up to the bow roller, I'd add a snubber system (one on each side) to the "tool box".

My name is Drew and I have a dragging problem

On my 356 with the 35 Delta we drag a lot; We never used to drag with my last boat. So much so the Delta is in my basement and I now have a Danforth 22 on the bow (So far untested). So what's the consensis? Do I need more chain for the Delta or should I scrap it?

Many factors

What's the bottom like ? Rocks need a grappel type, sand $ mud need a flat fluked type like a danforth or a plow. Kelp ?????? Go over the recomended anchor size by a size or two. It's heavier but when you really need to hold in bad conditions, you will be glad you did. How much scope is being payed out. Too steep an angle is going to pull out any anchor. When in doubt, let it out. 6-7 maybe even 8 X depth. We have about 25' of 7/16" chain on a fortress 23 anchor & 200' of 3/4" line on our H-33. We typically anchor in around 20' (MLW. So whenever possible, I let out about 100' of rhode. I have to date, not had a problem (knock on fiberglass).
