Just purchased a 1999 H340 and would like to add AC. The yard wants to install a hunter provided unit because all of the parts are pre-cut to fit the 340. Hunter only installs 12000 btu Mariner units and claim the 16000btu units will not fit under the starboard setee. Is a 12K unit adequate? We boat in the Chesapeake. Also, The ductwork for the main salon appears to pass thru the hanging locker. Does this eat-up a lot of space making the lockers unusable?

Partial answer?

Your interior volume is probably double my old H37C. I installed a 12K Mermaid but would have bought a 16K if not on "cold" Lake Erie. Water temp is key and Erie seldom exceeds 70 degrees. The Mermaid site's formula would definitely put you in a 16K unit. Their 16K is nearly the same size as their 12K. See the link.

My 340 AC

I am just completing the installation of AC in my 340. I installed a 16K btu Mermaid unit with reverse cycle heat pump. I will finish hooking up the wires and hoses and expect to turn it on this weekend. Hunter has installed Marine Air 16 k units in previous 340 boats. My friend has one. My installation is Mermaid. I sure wish I had bought the boat with factory installed air as I have worked 3 long weekends cutting through bulkheads, installing ductwork, pump, water filter, hoses, condensate drain, electrical wiring, circuit breaker air supply and return grills, thermostat etc. Is it your dealer that claims the 16k unit will not fit or have you gotten this directly from Hunter? Mermaid of SW Florida have been great to work with. Great help on the phone answering all my questions. I can give you lots of advice if you plan to do it yourself. For example putting the hole in the hull for the outlet water took considerable thought and planning. I was going to put it up high next to the thru hull for the bilge pump. All the boats I looked at with air had the outlet near the waterline or 6 to 8 inches above it. This minimiozes the sound of splashing water falling from a height and also if you tie up to floating dock the outlet doesn't spray water all over the dock. Many things like this to think about. I probably should write a book. I have air ducted to 3 cabins but I did it different than the Hunters I looked at. The ducting and equipment take up valuable storage space but it will be nice in August when it is 98 and humid here in North Carolina. I put the link to Mermaids web site.

Air & heat on H340

Over the winter I had a 16,000 BTU put in my 2000 H340 and it fit. Who ever does the work will have to notch out about ½ to 2/3 of the underside of the settee cover to have it fit. With out doing this I don’t think it will fit. I’m in lower Lake Michigan and with the cold weather the last month or so the heater has worked great.

More info 340 AC Installation

My AC is 16500 BTU not 16000 as I originally wrote. YOu should opt for 16K btu not the smaller unit if you can. As for taking up space in the hanging locker, the way I installed took up no space in the hanging locker next to the nav station. Everything I ran is behind the false panel in the hanging locker next to nav. I ran 6 inch duct forward into the hanging locker in the V berth and split off a 4 inch duct to the V berth. The 6 inch goes to a supply grill in the bulkhead looking back into the main salon. The only thing in the hanging locker next to the nav station is the thermostat wires as the thermostat is facing me when sitting at the nav station. I have to build a shelf under the nav station to cover the 4 inch duct, hoses and wires. There is a false panel in the rear of the hanging locker that can be removed and the 4 inch duct that goes to the aft cabin passes through there, then under the vanity in the head, then with much difficulty through the space behind the head under the little shelf on into the wet locker across the floor of the wet locker to a grill cut in it to supply the aft cabin with air. My 16.5 k BTU unit fits fine

As posted earlier, I have recently installed a 16500 btu unit on my 340 made by Mermaid. It is reverse cycle heat and air. It fits fine. There is about 1/2 inch clearance from the top of the unit to the underside of the setee. I have digital photos of the installation if anyone is interested. I located the seawater pump and filter screen in the bilge area. Wayne s/v Wind Drift

For AC Install Photos Paul, Send e-mail address

Paul, I did not find you listed in the owners directory here in HOW Send your e-mail address to westabrooks@unctv.org I will send photos of the AC install. The photos are before I finished securing the ductwork as I had to epoxy some wood to the hull to attach to. Wayne s/v Wind Drift
