Any 34 Owners; I continue to have some water into my bilge from [I think??] the mast???I have isolated this area....bilge is dry until it rains...then 1-2"___ but best I can tell in comes down from INSIDE the mast??New mast boot keeps the outside dry. I have yet to pull the stick and am not all that happy with the way my wires are run from the mast head.....they end up inside the track below the gooseneck and are covered with an aluminum trim strip.... best I can tell.[No, it is not coming from my stuffing box as the engine is sitting on the floor in my shop and stuffing box is crank down to zero drips].Anyone have this problem or a cure for same while I still have the mast in place??Plan to pull it next summer and completely rewire/rerig/paint/etc.____ however, in the meantime I could use some imput if you have cured this problem on your 34.!Thanks & smooth sailing.....or ice boating, depending on where you live!! 34 Leaks

Capt Hawk, I have noticed the same problem with leaks since the Boat was new. Intially it was around the mast which was sealed numerous times. Also, water will run down mast and in through the slots where the internal lines come out since there are no exit plates to deflect the water. This water should be minimal but would run to the bidge internally in the mast. Also, my suspicion that water enters the bildge around the Helmsman seat. Along the back side of the seat (the one with the hump) the seam is exposed and leads right to the bildge. Heavy rains would drip right in - What do you think? I haven't cured this one yet. Neal

34 Leaks

Neal; I had the same problem with water entering at the helm seat and running into the bilge.I cured mine by making a whole new helm seat.I now have a flat one that looks more like the ones port and stbd. in the cockpit. My seat was a problem anyway....I'm too tall to sit on the humped seat as it was without hitting my head on the backstay. No good...so I made a new seat without the hump.I will one day have a cushion guy make a cushion with a small enough hump that I can sit behind the helm and not hit the back stay. The other option was to do a split backstay.....but I did not like the angles created by this option.Plus I wanted to someday add a hydraulic backstay adjuster[Navtec]. Thanks for the info on the mast issue...I'm still trying to figure a cure.I have an idea, but will have to wait until I pull the stick...maybe late summer of 08. Have you tried putting some weather stripping along the back edge of your helm seat to seal it?? Cheers- CaptHawk RogueWave

Sealing helm seat

Capt Hawk, I tried this past weekend to put weather srtip in but as you squeeze in the weather stripping it moves the seat out creating a bigger gap by rotating the seat around the barrel bolts on the bottom. I'm going to need to come up with something else. Water will run down backstay, onto the flat portion of the deck and dump right behind the seat. I too have issues with hitting my head on the backstay and was curious if you had a picture of your modification? Did you ever update your Kenyon mast to include exit plates to deflect water? Last winter I just put Duct Tape over the holes and this helped but had the chore of removing the tape reisdue in the spring. Also, be sure your center hatch isn't leaking, as you know mine was. This turned out to be most of the problem (water leaked along headliner and did not necessarly drip at the hatch but leaked forward to the mast which would make you think the mast was leaking). 34 Leaks

Neal; Rodger weather stripping-bigger gap - and a no go. Will Email you the pictures of the seat redo if you want to see it.I was thinking of doing a mold in case other 34 owners wanted one. I have no more headliner in my 34...took all of it out from V-berth to 1/4 berth and am[not finished] filling/fairing/epoxy coating/and painting the entire thing.Mine was all rotten/mildewed and stained beyond repair. Now I can see if I have a leak and just where it is.Both my hatches have been redone.I put in all new ports[8] and now I'm working on the 2 dorade boxes.Have a small amount of rot on the stbd. one where the clear tube goes thru the deck. The port one[head] is ok where the tube comes thru the deck.At this moment I am seriously thing of removing the FRP box completely and just go with a s/s dorade setup that has the drain in the base.Would take up less deck space...but not sure??? if I want to go for the extra expense??? I removed all the teak handrails and have s/s ones to replace all that wood.Only wood I have external is at the companionway. I have not done anything about water deflection at the mast...other than rebed the mast ring and put on a new mast boot. That stopped all the water running down the outside of the mast...just have that annoying leak when it rains and runs down from INSIDE the mast. Leak not unque to S34

Leak is not unique to the S34. I had a S30T for 17 years and now Promises since 1999 and both have had the same issue. I put the halyard exit plates (though not caulked) on both boats and have gasketed the back edge of the hump but still have water in the bilge after it rains. I also do not see any water running under the engine when it rains. The headliner was removed this passed spring and have not seen any water on the headliner. In severe rains I get some rain leaking around the mast and am replacing the mast gasket this year. My make shift boot isn’t tight enough. The bilge is dry when the weather is dry. So if someone comes up with a answer I’m all hears or I’m reading. I learned to leave the sole access open when not on the boat so the moisture is not trapped under the cabin sole to rot the under side. It is untreated plywood with Teak and Holly top as everyone knows and prone to rot. I don’t know that there has ever been enough to run the bilge pump but it is a nuisance factor. Good Luck, Skipper of the sailing vessel Promises. Skipper@kellermanns.com

Helm / Leaks / updates

Capt Hawk / Others; I would be interested in your pictures of the rear seat redo as well as the changes in the handrails (did you get them to bolt up in the same holes with a custom build or did you drill new ones?). Until the spring, I covered the rear seat area the best I can with a small tarp to keep the water out while it's up in the stands and I will see if water in the bildge is less. I'll keep everyone posted. Also, I'm curious on the dorade box problem you had, since mine are original and I never had them off the boat. I guess based on what you are saying, there is may be potential of rot around the clear tubing. About changing the dorade box (what brand are you looking at or are you going to fabricate them yourself) that might be a good option since I never thought the stock set-up provided much ventilation anyway and would have always wanted to set-up a solor powered vent. Also, I always wanted to install guards aroud the Dorades since on occassion the cowl vents will get caught on the lines and pull out. I too had to remove and replace (in kind) the eight ports, and reseal after filling the rotted voids about five years ago. I recently noticed a few drips under pressure testing with a high presurred garden hose but no leaks under normal rain. I plan on resealing the annoying ones this spring. Did you replace your ports with same brand ports (Beckson) or go with a new brand? I'm still hanging on to the headliner - like the look and I know it's a big (meaning time consuming) job of filling/fairing/epoxy coating/and painting the entire thing. A little history about my boat is that it's a 1984 model named Blitz that I bought from my father a few years ago. He was the original owner, and I remember touring the factory in West Berlin, NJ when we bought it. We have always kept it in the Sandy Hook (Raritan Bay, New York Harbor & and Atlantic ocean sailing off of Coney Island / Long Island and the Northern New Jersey Shoreline) and it was even charterred minmally for a few years when it was new. Blitz has the original Yanmar 3GM (three bladed fixed prop) as well as most other things (Stereo, Raritan toilet, Datamarine Speed and depth, non self-tailing Lewmar winches) being original. Some upgrade/replacements I hope to do this spring is the center hatch, toilet, enhance the battery monitoring system as well as hard starting (believe to be a wiring harness voltage loss). Any suggestions would help - thanks to all. Neal

Water in Mast

I drilled a 3/8 hole in the back of the mast as close to the bottom as I could get and several gallons of water came out.

Mast leaks

That's scary. The bottom of your mast seals that good in the bildge to seal up the water? For mine, I think it just flows into the bildge, guessing that the top of the mast is open, and the exit holes along the sides of the mast for the haylards draws the water in (wicking action of the lines).
