I've added a bookicker to eliminated the backstay's interference with the roach on the main. It seams to work. The backstay tension is needed to make the flaking system work properly, so I ran it to the cockpit. Both seem to be positive changes. What am I missing?

I've heard from a number of you that the main halyard is difficult to raise, live with it. I jump the main at the mast and it goes up smoothly. I noticed that the clutch block fair leads put the main halyard in a kink. Any of you put a block in front of the clutch to change the angle of the line on the main?

I'd like to single hand, but I'm not quite fast enough to jump the main and run back to the cockpit to take up the slack. Any ideas?

Fit a Clamcleat

Yes.
I fitted a Clamcleat on the mast at shoulder height but NOT directly in the line between the halyard outlet and the sheave on the mast base.
Then, when I have finished hoisting, I pop the halyard into the Clamcleat and go back to the cockpit. I then pull all the slack halyard through the jammer at the winch and tighten the halyard using the winch as normal and it pops out of the cleat.
Slow but works every time.

My cleat is on the port side of the mast at shoulder height and 3" to 4" ahead of the direct line.
I used what the makers call a 'Lateral Port' cleat CL207, one which side mounts to the mast - but a big one to suit the halyard.
See:- http://www.clamcleat.com/cleats/cleat_details.asp?theid2=13
I suggest looking at this item in the chandlers before purchasing to make sure it is big enough for your halyard and you have the correct hand.

The halyard has never caught in it when letting it go with a rush when lowering.

PS: Did you mean 'Topping Lift' when you said 'Backstay' in your previous?

Re: Fit a Clamcleat

Danalex,
Thanks for the good idea, I'll check it out. Ya, I meant Topping Lift, mainly because the 336 doesn't have a backstay.
