I'm considering trading in my 1987 Catalina 30 (tall rig) for a 1995 336. I like the layout and the way the boat has been packaged, but I'm not comfortable with the published performance. I'm heavily involved in local racing, on Long Island Sound - near Port Jefferson NY. My concerns revolve around things like, no backstay, no traveler, small jib, shallow keel and changes/improvements made since the boat was introduced in '95. Before I make a decision, I'd like to get opinions from owners, especially those of you that race. I'd also like to get the specs, including J, I, P, E measurements. Hunter sent me a copy of the old brochure but the printing was unreadable. If your local to Long Island, please give me a call. (516) 595-5419. I'd really appreciate your help.

I went from a Cat 30 to the 33.5 which is very close to the 336. I also have been racing on a Cat 30 for the last 10 years. At first you will have to learn to sail again. The 30 gets her power from the jib where Hunter gets hers from the main. If I wanted a boat just to race I would keep my 30. We race against alot of older Hunters and have done very good against them. The hit you take in your rating is pretty hard also. I am sure that someone here races against Cat 30's all the time and wins, maybe they can give you some imput also. I just think if all you are looking for is a boat to race by the time you set it up like your 30 is you may not be as happy with how the new boat sails.
