What year did the 33.5 transition from a slanted foredeck to a flat deck with square fore-cabin? What other changes were made during that transition?

around 1990

Other changes: different port light configuration, bigger engine (Yanmar 3GM30), different transom configuration with lazarettes, U-shaped dinette. Of course the price went up too.

Funny that this "string" should appear. I've been doing a lot of research into the 33.5 becuase I really like the model. Yes, the changes were important and did raise the price. Right now I have a 285 (1987) and wold like to someday move up to a 33.5, 1990 or later. In two or three years. Having too much fun and learning a lot on the 285!

Differences

Any Idea what the original pricing was and how it changed?

Fall 1991

We bought a 33.5 new in fall 1991. It was hull number 11.

1992 335

Ambition is a 1992 335 and she has the larger Yanmar as well as U shaped salon table and the aft cabin berth runs beamwise as opposed to lengthwise. The transom includes 2 wet lockers as well as 2 lockers in the aft ends of the cockpit. We have sailed her for the past 6 years and love the boat. The only negative I have is the lack of a manual bilge pump and the inability to install one due to interior layout. You would be hard pressed to find a boat as spacious for the price. IMHO the 1990+ design changes are well worth the additional money that these boats cost.

I picked up my 33.5 in December of '89. I am embarrassed to say that after all this time I don't remember her hull #. She was a true "transistion boat" She still had the sloping foredeck, however, the portlights were changed to the configuration you see on the "square models". The last 33.5 delivered by the dealer was late summer early fall of '89 and that boat still had the oval lewmar hatches shown in the top photo. Mine still had the old interior layout,[square dinette to starbord, don't you love the "list"] and the aft cabin's bunk was a centerline double. Somehow the space between the bunk and cockpit sole has shrunk several inches, from when we got her in '89. The interior fabric was the "weave" from the '88 model, later '89 models had different fabric. We have the cut-out transom, with one lazerette in the stern, and the one big "mother-in-law berth" lazerette Starbord, it is big enough for at least one adult and two kids to crawl into. Yanmar is the 2 cylinder model, and our two rail is molded, with NO ANCHOR ROLLER! After all these years, it still bugs me, but not enough to try and fabricate something. Also, gotta love the ten foot wide wheel!. (only a slight exageration there) She has been a good boat, my first and probably last new boat and was a real bargain for the time. Right around 50k.
