I am bringing a new to me 1982 323 home over this coming weekend. I plan on doing a lot of sailing and motor sailing. Is it recomended that the transmission is in forward or nuetral?

Thank you

I am not at the boat. It has the Volvo MD 11C Diesel, 24hp. I have all the literature that came with the boat but it does not specify what transmission is with the Volvo.

Is it a 24 HP Volvo MD-11C diesel with Walter V-drive. 1-1/8" SS shaft with 3 blade 17" prop??

Yes it is refered to as a V Drive in the owners manual on the prestarting checklist. It says to check the V drive for proper alignment.

Edit to add, on the spec sheet it also says 1.91 : 1 Reduction. 17X12 LH style E, 1-1/8" bore 3 blade propeller.

This site, the people talk about what position the gear should be in when sailing. Seems to be mixed.

Good luck
Thank you. I read the other pages but this discussion was very helpful as it had the Volvo recommendations. It would seem for what I have the Volvo recommendation is to leave it in neutral for less wear on the gears. Whereas other set ups it is best to put it in reverse.
