322 Heave To

I was headed for http://www.greatharbourcay.com/ in the Bahamas and didn't want to go into the shallows at night. I wanted to "park" my new-to-me 322 up by Great Stirrup and still in the very deep water.

Winds about 25kts and seas 6-8ft so not that bad. I tried to get Tanqueray to Heave-To and she wouldn't. It may be the nature of a fin keel without a skeg.

I deployed my Galerider drogue but it's nowhere as comfortable as being Hove-To.

Any tips or suggestions on "Heaving To" a 322 offshore would be appreciated. All my previous boats were full keel so I may just be spoiled by their characteristics.

Love sailing the 322 and still can't believe the much higher than expected build quality and the amazing use of space.

try deploying the stogie from the stern. A series stogie is intended to run from the stern.

How big was your jib? Most boats have difficulty heaving to with jibs larger than 110. With a larger jib, on a furler, furl it first.

Jibes,
You got me with the Series Stogie - you even baffled Google. I'm guessing it's something like a Jordan Drogue. If not, can you describe it.

If it is a drogue, then trying to use it to "park" the boat sort of works but the motion is not pleasant. Being Hove To is sort of nice - like a duck bobbing. I think you're on a Tayana and she'll heave to well.

stupid cell phone changed the word on me. A series Drogue. They stay engaged always not like a parachute. The motion will be like pitching with very little headway.

Drogue

Run the Drouge off the bow and run a separate line from your Jib winch out to it with a block on the end with a large diameter sheave. use the winch to rotate your vessel into a position that is comfortable. This is from the book storm tactics.
It is necessary on vessels with modern keels that don't heave too like older full keel vessels.

Thanks Colin,
That's the Larry & Lynn concept and I tried it (on my Countess 37) after spending almost $1,000.- on a parachute and rode. It was a LOT of work. Retrieving it was then fives times harder than deploying it.
Where a chute almost stops the drift dead, the Galerider only cuts the drift by maybe 2kts.
I'll try your suggestion next week and report back.

I'm trying to find a quick way to park the boat for a couple of hours and hate the motion of just lying a hull.

Also, I'm not that confident in the way the cleats and winches are mounted. I don't want to strain them too much until I put large backing plates under them. That's not a negative on the boat since she was designed as a coastal cruiser. She's really much more than that but needs a few confidence building mods.

Stu,
I tried every sail combination I could come up with. Years ago I had a boat that Hove To only with a storm jib hanked on to the back stay. As an experiment, I am going to make an aft sail that will fit under the davits. I can't use the back stay because of the Bimini.
