322 Cabin Sole

Can anyone tell me what is under the part of the cabin sole at the bottom of the companionway on the 322. I would like to remove it, but it seems glued. Thanks.

Hi Dee! I worked for an Oday dealer in 88' and rigged, delivered and serviced several of the 30'+ boats. I looked at the 322 plan and it dose'nt look familiar to me but the construction methods were similar between the boats at that time. As I recall O'day had gone to a cabin sole that was a teak and holly plywood laminate of about 10mm or 1/4 inch. If you can measure the edge somewhere and it is about 1/4 inch, and you don't see any mounting screws then it may be glued down with some type of adheasive like 3M 5200 and removal would be very dificult. What is the reason that you would want to remove the sole? Sorry I dont have a specific answer...Pat Shanklin

I am thinking of replacing the sole, as it is worn in some spots. The part at the bottom of the companionway feels extremely flexible or spongy near the nav station and I was wondering if water was getting underneath it. Nothing significant in the bilge.

Sole repair

We had sole damage and removed and replaced all the sole with new similar looking plywood. You are right about that section. It is glued directly to the fiberglass underneath. We had someone do the work for us and the new sole looks better than the original did. It goes without saying, we love our 322.

Hi Dee,I cannot be too specific because mine is under covers for the winter and I am going from memory, but at the very base of the Ladder Steps is a 3-1/2" deep bilge locker approximately 14" wide by 18" long. On either side of the center bilge locker is the grey fiberglass inner liner of the hull. Maybe yours is different. Mine is a 1989 hull that wasn't finished until 1998 by another firm and it isn't very stock like inside! My Teak & Holly is fastened-down with SS screws countersunk in out of clear view places but has a removable Bilge Locker (floor section with recessed D-Handle)at the base of the steps.Hope this helps!Rick
