I am considering buying a 320 [not common in the UK] from the new Catalina UK dealer. It is difficult to get any idea of how well structured is its storage space. In particular is the cockpit locker suitable for inflatable, fenders, folding cycles etc? Interior storage is also important due to miserable UK weather and the need to cope with a climate that is ever changing? Many thanks for your thoughts.

Storage on a 320

Re the Catalina 320 there are generally three good size storage areas on the exterior of the boat. The main cockpit locker (port side) has two parts and the back portion I would think would hold a deflated inflaable. The forward portion of this locker is more like a shelf probably 36 inches by 18 inches wide which is fine for tool bag, equipment you need ready at hand. The rear port locker has a good size opening and really has a great deal of storage below for bumpers, life jackets extra sail bag etc. The starbord side real locker has a good opening not as deep as the port side but has a shelf which is probably 24 inches deep so there is a lot of room there. I don't know the size of your folding cycle but I would think you could find place for it assuming id did not have large wheels ( I would think a 20 inch wheel would work fine). I would think you would have to put the inflatable in the locker. The boat has a solid boom vang so you could not leave it under the boom unless you went to a soft boomvang. Inside there is adquate storage for crusing but not sure about an extended (over 5-7 day) cruise. The Catalina 320 we have found to be a very confortable, well made quality production boat. Probably not a heavy weather blue water boat.

C320 Storage Locations

The URL (below) is a schematic of all the various on-board storage locations. It also has a "placement list" for where at least one owner stashes things. You might go to the Catalina 320 International Association website to contact others with specific questions. They have a nice photo gallery, too. --RonD

may have to be 310

Thanks for the excellent feedback, the 320 budget makes this model a bit of stretch at the moment [us Europeans have to pay a large amount of shipping and tax]. So I am now looking at price / storage equation on the 310. Once I get the boat perhaps we ought to look some sort transatlantic go sailing programme where we could pick-up a sail with other catalina owners when travelling - anyone tried this as an idea? or do I sound crazy!
