Usually the size is more a function of the furler, Bill. I've attached a link for the webpage for the specs for a Hood 808, if you look under "Accessories" the first item is a furling line. If you can find the installation/owners manual for your furler it will specify size & if coreing is recommended.

3/8" is OEM

5/16" fits on the drum better

Best is very low stretch 3/8" with 20' of core removed.

Why would low stretch be necessary

for a jib furling line? The extra cost doesn't seem warranted. The jib furler line is essentially in one position or the other: furled or deployed. There is little tension on it when furled and stretch percentages or simple StaSet, for example, aren't gonna let the jib go anywhere.

Just curious.

The Shaffer furler that is installed on the C-320 Mark II (and for that matter, on must of the Mark Is too) is a roller reefer, so you can use it to reef down the headsail, not just furl it (unlike the Hood continuous line furlers on earlier boats (such as my two boats ago '87 C-30T)). Therefore, a low stretch (not the lowest stretch possible, but reasonably low stretch such as Samson XLS Extra) furler line can be a slight improvement over a medium stretch line such as StaSet.

Removing the first 20' of core (as measured from the drum) makes the line fit the drum better without over-rides and jams, and you would want the 3/8" for easier "hand".
