I have a 1996 Catalina 320. The draft from the water line measures out to about a 4"8'' draft. Specs say it should be 4"3". Did Catalina make some changes you know of with the 320 draft?

You're sailing in FRESH water

The density of fresh water is less than that of salt water. The draft of most boats is rated as for salt water. AS a result, your draft is deeper than advertised. In addition, once the 310 was built, Catalina used the same keel on both. The C-310 has less draft than the older C-320s, so the current advertised draft for the C-320 is 4' 3" while the older ones were advertised as 4' 8". The draft of the fin keel C-320s changed too. In 2002, the advertised draft was 6' 5.5" and the current draft is 6' 3" Steve Alchemist #909 (fin keel) Holland MI

Deep(er) Thoughts

Eric Yeah, they changed it. Not the only boat they did that to. Not a big deal. Go to the C320 website or their Sailnet board, or do a Forum Archive search on this 'site. Stu

Catalina got comments from owners saying they wanted a shallower draft wing keel, so hull #846 and older have a draft of 4'10"...hull #847 and newer have a draft of 4'3". They are the official drafts...you can figure salt vs fresh.
