All..this is my first post on this site and I am glad that I found it. I am looking at buyig a 1973 Coronado 32. I am looking at it tomorrow in Person, up to now have only seen pics. Can you all that know anything about this boat give me your opinions or advice. They were asking $13,500 (way to much), but today said they would take $5k. I thought it was at least worth looking at. I am semi new to the sailing word, but is this a boat I can take off shore, say down the California coast from SF to San Diego. Has a new Volvo 2 cylinder.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Get a survey done!!! That is a drastic price drop and I would be VERY careful. A survey is worth it and you will need one if you decide to insure the boat anyway.

Its a good solid boat I had a sail on one years back, but as Bad said live and die by that survey and make sure it out of the water survey. That hull has to be checked for blisters not common in that year of boat but thats greatly depends on how it was treated. The guy that does the survey will look for stuff you wouldn't think of. Good luck and fair winds
p.s. When your ready to make the run south give me a shout I will be happy to crew for you.

That boat is certainly capable of sailing south down the cali coast.....but........you should spend a lot of time on it, and understand what you need to upgrade or repair before you head out... It would be advisable to get as much experience on it as possible before going on any extended trip. I wouldn't buy it and take off the next day.... that's a disaster. It's advisable to make a few short, test runs locally to get dialed in.

A $5000 boat, no matter what size, is going to need a careful appraisal and probably a sizable investment to make it safe for any kind of coastal use... the trip down to so cal can be very easy, or it can be difficult.. the weather and sea conditions around Pt Conception can be overwhelming at times... not to mention fog, offshore drilling rigs and major ship traffic. You really need to know what you are doing.

As far as the boat goes, the motor condition, hull integrity(including through hulls and deck joint seams) and rigging are paramount considerations. You'll also want to analyze sail condition.... something the surveyor may not do.

In addition, you'll want to equip the boat with minimal electronics and navigation hardware.... GPS, VHF radio,, compass, depth, some kind of wind speed device, etc.... also check to make sure you have adequate safety equipment... pfd's, harness, MOB device, flares, flotation device, medical kit, jacklines, etc....

Finally, the trip you propose does not offer many safe harbors between SF and LA. There will be at least one overnight run. There are good cruising guides that will help you plan the trip for a safe passage... but I would pick a crew that had some experience. Good Luck.

I don't know the boat. I just love finding things with a few clicks of the mouse. But, yes get a survey if your really thinking of buying. On the other hand if the engine is indeed new that's worth around $5,000 or more right there if you had to buy one.

Bob, I had a '72 Coronado 27 (a Bill Tripp design) that was commissioned in Sausilito and sailed to the Chesapeake Bay through the Panama Canal on its own bottom.

Coronados are substacially built boats, a sister company to Columbia. Given good weather windows they can make the trip you envision.

As with any older production boat, there are issues speciific to each model. If it has the infamous "H" connection between hull and deck, you have one area of concern to address. The rest will be leaking ports and deck penetrations. The glasswork was thick for its age, not like current production standards. Rigging will be your major concern.

By all means get a survey before making your purchase committment. There are so many things that could be an issue with a boat of that age.

Post your questions on the Columbia Owners website and you'll get response from those with more appropriate knowledge.

Took a good hard look at her today and found out the reason the price was reduced so drastically is because it is what she is worth. The owners defaulted and left her at the marina, but took all the sails and the wind generator, as well as the plotter. She needs paint inside and out but all in all a very sturdy boat. I have an appraiser coming next week. They are will to move even further off her price..Will let you all know what happens.
Dan, what is this H connection you speak of. There is a wood strip that they called a rub board that is located where the hull would meet the deck. This definately needs replacing. I would guess with something other than wood.

Sounds like it will be a few years before you make your trip, but the boat could be worth it. Gotta have the survey.

Well yesterday I went back again and took another look and it happened to be raining pretty hard. Bothe the fore and aft facings were soaked. I noticed the ceiling in the cabin was blistered due to water. I decided to pass on this one. If anyone knows of a quality boat in Nor Cal for sale let me know. My max budget is $10k. Thanks...Bob

MR...

On the smaller Columbias/Coronados, the deck and hull were joined on the vertical by the infamous "H" aluminum extrusion. They notoriously develop leaks from the "working" joint, especially when a lot of dock rubbing has occurred.

On my 27 it took about four tubes of polysulfide per side to fill just the top of the "H" on the outside surface after I spent days clawing out the old caulking that had been applied by some PO. Over time this shrinks and will cause leaking again.

From the looks of the line drawing, this could be how the 32's deck/hull joint is fitted. A pix would help...
