315 engine question

All of the brochures and spec sheets I can find say that the 315 is equipped with a Yanmar 3ym20 engine. But I just saw a 2015 315 with a 2 cylinder, 13.5 hp 2ym15. Were purchasers offered a choice in past years? And why would anyone want a lower horsepower engine for a 10,000lb+ vessel? As far as I know there is no choice available today.

cheers
John

I doubt it was an option. The B 311/331/323 line probably went through the same process- use the small engines in stock then switch to the higher power that most skippers wanted. I believe the 323 came out first with a 3ym15, then went to the 20. When I was looking at the 323, it was advertised with 22 hp. When Gori calculated a prop for me base on the 22 hp, I was overproped . I finally saw the top of my engine saying 3ym 20, so ordered a new prop and all is well.

Call Catalina and ask? Especially if you know the hull number.

I suspect that it is either a typo or something awful happened to that boat and it was re-powered. Mine is a 21hp, Yanmar, 3 cylinder, 3YM20.

Not a typo. Check out the photo of the top of the engine in the following stream of pictures sent to me by the broker advertising this boat. Perhaps it was an engine replacement. Nothing said about it in the specifications on Yachtworld.

John you have a keen eye. I also think the asking price seems low for a 2016 with full instruments and radar. What do think might have happened to this fairly new boat to get it repowered? Your question has brought out the detective in me.

Yachtworld has some photos of this boat that are left out in the link you posted and nicely numbered.

You can magnify them by clicking on them and zooming up in the browser.

-I see no cradle in photo 36, I mine came with one.
-Also odd in photo 36 is the two tone bottom paint.
-Photos 12 and 13 show water stains under the refrigerator.
-Photo 24 shows possible water stains near the V-Berth

Personally, I would stay away form this one!

I blew up the engine picture from your link and ..... This is very strange. Perhaps it is the right engine, but rebuilt.

That pic sure looks like 3YM20 and that is in the broker website. Best to call, I was mislead by a boat with the wrong year in the ad, honest mistake but was the difference from what we wanted.

Thanks Stephen for the further detective work. My broker called Mr McCann who promised to get to the bottom of this mystery. I’ll post more information when we get it.

The broker sent a copy of the same picture that Stephen sent, confirming it’s a 3ym20. no explanation for why the other label says 2ym15. As cross border travel is becoming quite difficult as a result of Covid19, I guess I won’t be going to look at any boats in the US anytime soon. Thanks for the help so far.

Ultimately, there are more sailboats chasing dollars than dollars chasing sailboats. Boats sales are "as is" for the most part. You are wise to be choosy. I imagine with all that is going on, sellers are apt to be pretty flexible as well right now. I went to Yachtworld and made a list of used sailboats for sale in Canada:

-30 to 35 feet
-Can$50k to Can$130k,
-model years 2000 to 2024

I got a list of 30 boats. I am sure you'll find a great boat that fits you. When you do, please post a picture!
