310 main out haul disconnected inside boom

Sailing today included discovering the loose footed main that has an internal boom factory out haul has parted inside the boom. the wire on the aft end is completely loose and the line on the mast end will not move. How does one get a look inside the boom the determine what is broken? How is this repaired?

In the mean time we rigged a line between the clew and the topping lift shackle to get some shape to the sail.

Here's a link to the Catalina 310 owner's manual. You can thank SBO for that. Anyway, see page 34 of the manual for an illustration of the outhaul system. Pretty straightforward, I think. On my older C27, the caps at both ends of the boom can be detached by removing a couple of screws. I'm sure your later model boat will be simarly accessed. Good luck.
